Computer monitor changes resolution whenever I turn on/off my HDTV

Okay, here's my setup first:

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate
Hardware: Athlon 64 X2 4800+, 4 GB RAM, Radeon HD3850 video card
Displays: Acer 20" LCD (DVI1), Westinghouse 32" LCD HDTV (DVI2 via DVI-HDMI cable)

Now the problem. Basically, most of the time when I turn on or off my TV, it will cause my computer's monitor to change resolution to 1366x768 or something like that. I currently have the ATI drivers set up with three presets - one where the TV and monitor are mirrored, one where the monitor is the only screen, and one where I use the two screens in a dual-monitor setup. I can select these presets just fine, but if I turn the TV off, my computer freaks out and decides it has to switch to my TV's native resolution of 1366x768. This is normally just a minor annoyance, involving a quick right-click to open ATI Catalyst and switch the monitor back to its native resolution. If I turn off the TV in the middle of a game, though, it can cause major problems with the game trying to display at 1680x1050 when the monitor continues to insist on running at 1366x768.

So is there any way to fix this, perhaps forcing the ATI drivers to not check for displays or change resolutions unless I go into the control panel and tell it to? Do newer versions of the Catalyst Control Center or the drivers in general fix this?
