In October/november I upgraded my 4 computers by maxing out the mem, 2 gig, and the CPU 2.8 P4 533 FSB. I ran tests on the CPU and the memory and all was fine.
Over New years weekend, I reinstalled WinXP from scratch on all the computers. Basically, now like new computers, all was fine.
NOW, On 1 of the computers, it is locking up constantly. I thought it was the memory, so I ran MEMTEST86 V2.01 and it locked up within the first minute. I took out 1 stick and ran it again, it locked up within 2 minutes. I ran it with only the other stick, and it locked up quickly. I took a memory from another computer, and it locked up.
What would cause memtest86 to lock up? Could it be the CPU?
I didnt have any problems with this computer unitl I tried to install Adobe reader 9.0. I have adobe 8.1 full version, but websites want the new version. It would not install with full version 8.1 on the computer. I uninstalled adobe 8.1 and installed 9.0 reader, and it worked fine, for a day, then all this locking up and freezing started.
I started in safe mode, and it would freeze. I ran msconfig, and disabled the adobe and it still froze.
Could a CPU that was working fine, just go bad igf nothing has happened to it? Can installing/uninstalling a program cause memtest86 to freeze?
