Computer locks up. Fudge.

Heres the story:
For some reason, that I still have not figured out, my computer sees only half my ram. So I opened up the case to try and see if maybe one of the sticks is loose, or something. Theres nothing obvious, but there is some strange behavior when only on stick is installed, the computer wont boot. It gives a d-let message that the memory is damaged or not installed properly. So basicly The computer will not boot without BOTH sticks (256 each) in, and I have no way of knowing whats causing this. In my frustration, I try again to get it to boot with only one stick in, but this time I get a different message, something about there being no vga adapter. So, I start checking things, still not booting. I clear the cmos - nothing. Then I notice that the video card is loose -- of course. The system boots fine. Everything seems normal (besides the fact that it says I have only half the memory) until i come back after leaving the computer for a while and it's locked up. Completly. You would think that with XP you would get some kind of blue screen or something, but there is no indication that anything happened. This problem, of course, still persists. It will also lock up while doing random things like changing settings in serious sam, or installing a program.

What should I do? I have gone through all sorts of bios settings, reinstalled drivers, checked all the cables, underclocked the video card and cpu and stood on my head while singing mary had a little lamb, but nothing is working.

It might be some bad RAM. Try testing it in another computer and see if you get the same problems. Some motherboards require you to really push hard to get the RAM into the slot. When it's in, you should hear a "click". Hope this helps.
