Computer locks up everytime I burn a cd with my Plextor 12/10/32

I just got this today and can't even get a single cd made. No matter what speed I try, the computer locks up when I go to burn a cd. I've tried turning DMA off, auto insert off, Different software (Nero and Easy cd), even tried downclocking my c366@550 back down to 366 and still a no go. Any ideas?

are you using EZCD creator 4.02 that was included?

the drive is very new, older versions of ANY software may not recognize it.

Things to check :
- disable any other programs when burning esp. virus programs.
- Cmos Integrated Peri. - Disable DMA for Burner and set Pio
to PIO mode 3 or so
- Degrag drive (set up another partition to burn from if poss.)
- try burning at a lower speed, also, can your cdrs handle 12x?

Laper, thanks I'll give all those a try. I don't know about the partition though because I generally burn from my second hard drive. I also always close my antivirus before burning. And yes, my cdr's can handle 12x.
I have figured out a way to get it to work but I don't know why this works. If I run a system test in easy cd creator before I burn a cd, it always works. Any ideas? It doesn't make any sense to me.

your HDDs are in the primary and secondary channels. are you trying to burn from the HDD that shares a channel with your burner?

THIS IS A VERY BAD IDEA as with IDE, only one drive of a channel can be used (read\write) at any given time.

I had a plextor 4x8x32 that loved to lock up too and I got rid of it.
In my opinion the sony is much much better .

Mday: I have my hdd's on completely different channels, maxtor on ata66 channel 1 and the quantum on ata66 channel 2. The plextor is on ide channel 3 and the memorex is on ide channel 4.
