Computer locks up after loading windows

My pc locks up after loading windows ME. While reaching the destkop after a cold boot up, the keyboard and the mouse are unresponsive.
After after rebooting the machine, it works fine.
I play some graphic intensive games or just listen listen to music wile on line

Athlon 1.4 Ghz w/ Stock HSF
Soyo K7V-Dragon
Crucial 256 Mb RAM
ATI Radeon 8500 64 mb
two 20 gig maxtor raid 0
one 80 gig maxtor
one 40 gig western digital
40 80 mm case fans
enermax 330 watt psu

Any Suggestions.

What version of DirectX are you using?
If you haven't updated to v8.1b you may want to as
it deals with issues regarding your ATI video card and
mouse/keyboard input.

I haven't installed directx v 8.1b. i'll give it a try and see what it does

installing direct x v8.1b did the job.

the computer still doesn't boot up correctly after installing the directx update.
So i have know idea about how to fix this problem.
