Computer locks playing MP3s

I have an Abit KT7A, 1 gig Tbird, 80 meg Maxtor HD (master) and 13 gig Maxtor as the slave. Both are on IDE 1. The slave has all my mp3s and some back up docs on it. I'm running Win2k SP3 and use Media Player to play the mp3s. Often after I've played a few the computer locks and I have to reboot. I use PowerDesk for the file manager and it seems the computer locks usually (but not always) after I've done a bit of directory changing in PowerDesk. Because that isn't always the case, I don't know if this is a software or hardware problem.

Can anyone help?

Try using Winamp? It'd at least rule out media player and is better by far anyway; if it works out you're all set.

I'm not sure if I've tried Winamp, but I had the same problem with Nero Media Player.

1. Winamp > *
2. Install Winamp + get the MAD codec from their site, it will rule out your codec.
3. Reinstall Sound Card Drivers
4. What have you changed in the recent past?

The caps are fine (knock wood). I haven't changed anything recently. The only addition was the second HD.

FYI - The sound card is an SBLive!.

kt133(a) had issues with the original Live! card..a TBSC would be so much sweeter as well :);)

My mistake, the SBLive is only used for recording. I have a Philips PSC705 for playback.
