computer locks frequently with radeon 8500le

i just bought a radeon 8500le to replace my slightly aged gf2 gts, i had small problems at first but they quickly escalated to random freezes and sometimes the monitor stops recieving a signal. i have no idea why this would happen.
before i installed the radeon, i uninstalled the gf2 drivers and card also uninstalled nvmax, as i would not need it anymore.

the new card is in the slot firmly and has a locking tab to keep it in, so it is not the fault of a loose card.

i have the latest drivers(5.13.01.6071), although i have not tried previous versions.

this card is installed in an epox 8kha kt266 chipset board with a 1400mhz athlon tbird and 512 mb ddr ram running windows 2000.

any help will be appreciated

When does the monitor stop receiving a signal? Do you mean you would be browsing the web and the monitor would go out?

yes, it acts the same way it would if you have power saving mode on and the monitor will go blank after so long and have a blinking light. then, if i turn the monitor fully off and then back on it displays the self test screen, just like if it hasnt recieved a signal. it just seems to do it randomly, i cant see a correlation with any particular activity..except that it is always ON when it happens🙂

Are you using DVI?

My 8500 (using DVI) use to have a problem when it switches resolutions such as during games and it would act like you described. However, this hasn't happened since a few driver versions ago. I've never heard of it doing this out of the blue.

There is a problem in that shutting off the monitor and turning it on again would result in the monitor no being able to detect a video card signal. One way around this would be to wait for power manager to turn off the monitor and then waking it up would revive the monitor again. Of course this is a different problem than what you're experiencing. I believe this is DVI only as well.

Have you tried looking and searching the Rage 3d forums? It's a great place to look for ATi vid cards.

beats me. Only thing I can add is the obvious. Make sure not only your card has updated drivers, but your motherboard and monitor. ANY hardware you have that is video related. I've never used that card myself so I can't offer any other opinions.

DeRusto is now at my house. We put the card in my comp and so far no freezes. I'm wondering if this is an issue with the KT266 (note: not a 266a) or Epox. We did find a thread at Rage3d forums where a person had a similar problem except his computer would reboot instead of freeze.

Does anyone know of an issue between the 8500 and either the KT266 or Epox motherboards?

I would not assume that the video card is properly seated just because the locking tab is engaged. I've seen video cards and memory cards that were improperly seated - even though the locking tabs snapped in.

Starts fine (when cold), then screws up (when temps climb). This symptom, or purely random faults, indicate possible poor card-edge contact engagement.

It sounds to me that you've done everything right regarding the drivers. It only takes a few minutes to power-down, pull the video card and reseat it. Might not help, but I'll feel better (little joke there).

Hope this helps!

I don't know of any issues with Epox boards, but if you think it's a motherboard issue, why not tweak the BIOS. Try diabling AGP fast write or changing the the AGP aperture size.

The card has been reseated 2 times before. I myself have a 8500 retail and DeRusto is putting it in currently in his system to see if it freezes. Still no freeze on my comp with his card in.

I think it's a mobo problem. DeRusto's computer frooze immediatly every time with my card in there... I don't think his board likes the Radeon 8500, my computer ran without a hiccup from his card.

Just in case someone decides to read this thread, I did confirm that it is a motherboard problem because I bought a new board and now my radeon works just fine.

Thanks, to all who helped.
