computer locking up

for some reason recently, my comp has been locking up about every 20 sec, itll be fine, then the mouse will freeze, and i cant do anything for 5-10 sec, then it returns to normal. I check the task manager and nothing out of the ordinary. Except, does anyone know what cputest.exe is, cause it is running every time i boot up, and i have to manually shut it down cause it used 15,000 of my memory. THere is nothing running that wasnt before, and i dont know why i would all of a sudden be getting this lag.

I would GUESS that you got a trojan that is running some distributed computing program crunching or somethign.

run prime 95
what are your temps
whats your power supply brand and wattage?

do those things and report back.

bad hardware doens't make programs named "cputest.exe" pop up out of nowhere.

i got a normal psu with 500w no prob there, i just dont know what this cputest.exe thign is

sounds like you've got a trojan

go into Start-->Run-->then type msconfig. click on the startup tab then look for that program cputest.exe. if the box next to it is checked, uncheck it then restart your pc. also check your add/remove programs and try to uninstall that particular program.

yeah i looked, nothing there, so i just have to close it on every boot up

i found it in msconfig, it was a service. I think it was actually from STEAM (ugh, i know) and its option cpu testing. I for it turned off, so its all good now!
