Computer locking up in 3D Games, or monitor shuts off

Computer: Shuttle AN35N Ultra w/ mobile 2400+ cpu, a refurbished sapphire 9600 pro 128mb.

Computer runs completely fine with 2D apps. I can sit and watch a DVD or leave it on all night and it runs fine, but it really has problems when a 3d game is loaded. The game will usually only last about 5 to 10 minutes before the computer locks up or the monitor shuts off.

I've tried both the latest ATI drivers and well as the latest Omega drivers. I've tried the computer at 166fsb and 200fsb. I've tried upping the AGP voltage in bios to 2.55+. Same thing happens no matter which settings I'm using; the games just freeze up.

Anything else to try or should I rma it?

Are you getting any artifacts before it locks up? It might be getting too hot. Is the heatsink attached correctly and not loose? Someone may have taken it off to see the core then carelessly slapped it back on to return it.

I'm at work right now so I can't verify the heatsink seating, however, I do know the lockups happen randomly and WITHOUT artifacts, the game will just stop.

CPU is getting to hot. That would be my first guess.

CPU temps are fine, about 47C under load. Before I turned VPU off, the games would lockup and VPU errors were being reported. It sounds video card related, just not sure what the problem is.

It's video card related. The card may be overheating. I used to have that problem all the time. The monitor light would go orange and the computer would stop responding. Try getting the latest Catalyst drivers.

Already tried the latest drivers and the latest Omega drivers. Same problems. Any other ideas?

Same thing use to happen to me while playing call of duty. But since it only happened in that game, I'm just assuming it was bug. Overheating is a possibility, but look to see if the problem is spread out amoung multiple games/apps.

Yes, it is spread out over stuff. In every single 3D game, the game will shut down after 5 to 30 minutes.

Games that have a problem:

BF:1942
Tron
Call of Duty

Red - Then yes, it does sounds like you are overheating. Other then that, it could be your memory. I've had bad memory be flacky on me before.

I would say overheating- if it were memory problems, then you would experience instability in Windows and 2D apps as well as games. As you're not seeing this, then it sounds like the card is on the way out.

Is it hot to the touch?

but it could be heat as well.

Mmm, that's an idea- power usage goes up during 3D operation, the rails drop too low, computer acts up. Yeah, I'd add that one to the To Try list 🙂

Yes, very well could be the power supply, I had very simalar problems when I was using a cheap POS 400w power supply. Otherwise the video card is probably overheating, maybe thats why it was the original owner sent it back in the first place...

What do you mean the game will shut down? Do you mean it locks up like your thread title says, or do you mean you crash to the desktop?

If you're overclocking the card, try setting it back to default.

Have you tried the card in a system that's a fresh install?

It's either the powersupply (Under more load in games), RAM (see if it passes memtest), or overheating GPU (put some AS3/5 on that GPU!)
