are they really that great?

you have to pay to get in but then everything could be crap?

and what about the software? is it all legit and legal?
 
if its an auction type ...forget it...Ive been to a few and people pay more than retail for the stuff
 
At my University I go to them, get good stuff all the time...SDRAM for like $5 for a bundle...whole computers (400mhz) for cheap...it's not just computers, all electronics...
 
In general, liquidation sales reek. Typically a liquidator will also truck in wares that didn't sale at previous liquidation sales. They know exactly how much stuff is worth. If it doesn't sell this time, they'll load it back on the truck and try to sell it at their next liquidation sale (which might be 500 miles away).

If it's an auction, chances are people will bid up the stuff they can easily recognize. Even worse than ebay prices. That's not to say you can't find a bargain. You have almost no chance of getting a computer for a decent price at an auction but you might be able to score other gear like Ciscos at red hot prices because most people don't know what they are or how much they're worth.

you pay about 8 bucks to get in and walk around to dif booths for stuff
 
Comp Show and Sales are worth it, which sounds like what you're talking about.

That's not a liquidation sale. Very good deals can be found (optical usb mouses for $3-5, small stuff like that, and then also good deals on the big stuff too).
 
Just a bunch of overpriced junk. Think ebay prices plus 30% to cover their overhead. You'll probably see off-lease P2 laptops selling for $500 with "Down from $5000!". Those who have no idea what they're buying will think it's a super price since new laptops go for $2k, not realizing how old and pathetic the P2 laptop really is.
 
The last one of those I went to, I paid 6-7 bucks to get in, and there was ONE booth selling computer stuff. And as others have said, it was crap. Outdated software, overpriced laptops, etc. Most of the "super liquidation sale" was knockoff designer clothes and open box/scratch & dent stereos - the usual flea market crap.
 
The computer shows used to be the best place to buy computer stuff.... back before the internet came into it's own. Right now, based on the last couple of shows I attended, the selection is mediocre, and the prices are no better than any decent internet vendor (usually worse). Add to that the sales tax, and the fact that you're buying from some no-name booth/shop (instead of a reputable newegg for example), and there's no reason to go to one of those computer shows/sales anymore.

Yeah, they started getting to be no-so-great around the time Newegg started taking off. For a while there, it was better to buy cases and monitors there because of the shipping, but anymore cases are so cheap it doesn't matter if shipping is kind of high. Maybe monitors are still better if you buy them locally, I dunno, my last monitor was an LCD screen.

Most of the venders are small when compared to Newegg. I worked for a small shop once, it was cheaper for us to go online to buy stuff then it was to order from our wholesalers.
 
If you need heavy stuff, monitors cases, UPS, printers, speakers with a subwoofer...sure

If you want cheap little things sure, like has been said before name brand stuff will be regular price if not more
