Computer keeps turning off.

Anandtech experts please help me diagnose what is wrong with my computer. Last night while surfing the web the computer just turns off. When I restart, it will give me the "post beep" but will turn off once I sign in.

This morning it did it again. However, if I'm in safe mode it stays on. Do you guys know what is wrong?

My system:
CPU: A8-3870K
GPU: on board (6550D)
PSU: OCZ Modxtream Pro700
Ram: Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB
Sound Card: Asus Xonar DG
Motherboard: A75A-G55
HDD: Seagate 1tb barracuda
Wireless card: TP-Link TL-WN722N
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits

Is this a new build or have you added any new components?

When this happens, does the screen say "Windows is shutting down" (or something similar) before it turns off, or does it just immediately turn off as soon as you log in? Also, does it make any unusual sounds -like an alarm- or give any error messages?

O.K. I spoke to soon. It turns off in safe mode as well. To make sure it wasn't my power supply, I hooked my computer to my spare NZXT Hale 82 power supply (brand new) and it did the same thing.

No sound at all. Just quietly turns itself off. Computer was built about 3 months ago and no new hardware was installed recently. The last new hardware was the Xonar DG which was installed well over a month ago.

Will it power off if you just leave it at the login screen or even in the BIOS? What are your temps in the BIOS?

It powers off after the login screen. Right now it is running fine for over 10 minutes. I'm typing this on this computer right now. Can it be overheating? I have 4 intake fans (2 front, 2 on side), and 3 exhaust fans (1 rear and 2 on top).

Not to sound insulting or anything but have you cleaned it since it was built? Has it been jolted or banged? To start head into the BIOS and can you get us the CPU temp?

No not insulting at all. Have never been banged around and have always spray off dust once every 2 weeks. Will go into BIOS and report back to you. Maybe it is overheating as it is running fine with the side panel off.

Typing this on my 2nd computer as when I went to reboot to get into BIOS the computer shut down once I got into BIOS. Can this be a motherboard issue?

CPU temperature started at 77 degree celsius and climbed to 87 degree celsius and then turned off.

Yep, definitely overheating. Check the CPU fan to make sure it is spinning freely (and fast). Check the CPU heat sink to make sure there isn't any dust or anything else in or on it. If the fan and heat sink are fine, you might want to remove the heat sink, clean and replace the thermal paste, then reseat the heat sink firmly to make sure it is getting a good contact with the CPU.

UGH...the CPU fan is going out and it's only 4 months old. Noticed that the CPU fan spins fast and then slow. The last boot up attempt, the fan didn't spin at all. Oh well, going to order another stock amd stock fan & heatsink.

You might want to look at something a bit better than the stock heatsink. Here's a list of Arctic Cooling heatsinks:

These are fairly inexpensive. Are you going to replace the heatsink yourself and have you ever done it before?

I have installed a cooler master hyper 212+ on my girlfriend's build. It was PITA. Wanted to kick the damn thing across the room.

The very 1st Arctic Cooling seems to be easy to installed per the reviews. Will it fit next to my vengeance ram?

This Zalman heatsink looks very similar to the Hyper 212 Plus, but looks to be a lot simpler to install, and is slimmer so should fit even with the tallest RAM. The only caveat is that the fan is custom, so if that fan dies you'll have to replace the whole heatsink.

Of course, you could just replace the fan with the current heatsink.

Unfortunately they are all a pain now. If you need room I believe you can move your RAM to the two outer slots.

Just watched a tutorial for the Arctic Cooling freezer 7 and it looks to be really easy...except it's for an intel processor...arghh. My ram is in slot 2 and slot 4 already. To make things easy, I'll buy low profile ram if needed.

Thank you very much for your help Ky54. The Arctic Freezer 7 would fit my CPU except the only tutorial was for installing with an intel cpu, thus the arghh. I did order the Zalman and some arctic silver 5 just in case I have to take it out and re-install should there be any f**k up.

Great, you're quite welcome. Once you get everything together if you have any questions just fire away. AS5 has good instructions on using and cleaning your heatsink and CPU. If I'm not mistaken the Zalman will already have the thermal grease on it and if I remember correctly it's pretty good stuff.

Go watercooling.... I'm planning for a big project for this upcoming winter to use it as a heating system. I will be using a bath tub as a reservoir open loop system. Gonna have to get me couple of 40 or 50ft tubing and mount them on the walls...
