I don't know why this happens...
my computer justs shuts off on its own... its a ATX motherboard... 300 watt power supply... I have a lot of stuff inside CD ROM, floppy, 3 HD's I am wondering if thats the reason why... I replaced the power supply and the new one is doing the same thing... is the new one bad as well or is there just too much stuff inside for the power supply to handle... any ideas would be great

I have a friend and he got some kind of Intel BX board that shut off it self
when he disable the CPU temperature monitoring in BIOS it stops shut off.
It must be some mayor problem whit the onboard temp sensor.
Try it!! it maybe helps

I agree with checking the temperture.

Check all your fans and make sure they are turning.
Check the heatsink on your processor to make sure it is not clogged with dust.
Look at the power supply cable where it connects to the motherboard. It's rare but they have been know to go bad. The connector will be discolored to a brown color if that is the case. (Probably not your problem since you got a new power supply, but thought I'd thow it in anyway.)
If you used thermal paste between the processor and heatsink, it has been know to dry out. A cleaning and reapplication has been known to help.
If you think it is heat, try leaving the side of your case off and blowing with a small table fan into the case.
Power off and unplugged, reseat all your boards, memory and processor.

A 300w power supply should be able to handle 3 HDs and a CDRom, I doubt that is your problem. You could prove it by disconnecting two HDs and the CDRom though.

What is the pattern of it shutting off. That may help with a diagnosis.

its just happens randomly... and then sometimes I can't turn it back on for a while... do you think it could be the motherboard?

I dont think it is the heat, I have the same probem and I use 2 psu (1. 235w running the fans, 2. 300w running the hardware). I think we have the same probem, My comp just suddenly shutt it self off. When this do happen I must wait a cuple of min.. and sometimes over 10min. The strange thing is that this dont have any clear patern.. I can run my comp 24 in severall days. But suddenly a system crashes and I have to press the resett buton. then boom.. it shutts off. And other times this can happen when just sitting there and boom it shutts off. Luckly this dont happen every day..

I did test the psu if it could be that, and I guess it is. When you connect the grean and grey wire the psu should power up when you give it power. But this dont happen, I have to have the same wait as when it is connected to the mobo. So Go Terps you could try this it to see if it is your cpu that is not acting as it should. I for one.. will replace it.

Anyone know where I can get a good 300w psu and silent here in Norway?

It's a long shot, but see if the little slide switch on your power supply is set for 220V instead of 110V (assuming you live in a 110V region). My boss's computer was having random shutdowns and guess what? It was set for 220V. Switching it to 110V fixed the problem, and the computer is unharmed. Good luck, bro. : )
