My Computer (Athlon XP 2700+, 512mb, XP PRO SP2) continuously locks up when I try to extract large archives (over 3gb), or even repair multipart archives using quickpar. I have no idea what I should do here, I have tried using it in another user mode (with less junk installed), and nothing. I've also done a virus scan and ad-aware, and still am lost as to what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Run checkdisk and set it to scan the surface of the drive. Might be bad sectors.

chkdsk x: /r

Also run a memory diag prog

You may be over heating OR you also could have a bad PSU.

Memory test - Memtest86+

Also, get Everest and install it. Under its Storage section, click SMART. Right-click on any of the data that shows up in the bottom right window, select Copy, and paste the mess of it back here.

What brand and type of power supply do you have?

I have an Antec PSU that has never given me trouble before. I downloaded Western Digitals diagnostic tools and the program just stops and does not finish the diagnosis. Also, I can copy/extract large files from the C drive (a maxtor 80gb), without a hitch, but the other drive is another story. The same thing happens when I use another computer to access the drive (through network). Are there any comprehensive programs that run before windows starts (i.e. a better chkdsk). Memtest also came up clean after being run overnight.

Western Digital's diagnostics would be it; don't know why they'd stop. Do you have another PC to test the drive on?

I've run the diagnostic programs from WD, and it goes, but everytime it reaches a certain sector, it just stops (the directions say if a bad sector is found it would stop for a few mins). Ive left it running for hours and it still stays there. Does this mean that I have a bad sector? What programs can I use to fix it (WD boot program does not work).
