Computer keeps freezing up

My computer works fine for a long time, then suddenly freezes. My hard drive light goes non-stop. I use "Speedfan", and the temperature is fine, the first thing I thought was that it was overheating. I've been cleaning up my system, defragging, using Hijackthis, using several anti-virus programs, updated Windows, but it still keeps happening several times a day.

What I need is some kind of little program that keeps track of what is running, so when this happens and I re-boot the computer, I can look at the log file to see exactly what the last thing is that is running. Any suggestions?

You already have one. Check your Event Viewer. Control Panel -> Administration Tools -> Event Viewer.

However it's possible that the system is locking up without genrating an error.

Did this start happening out of the blue or has this system always been this way?

Just running HijackThis is not enough to find out if you have spyware problems. Refer to my detailed spyware cleaning instructions: http://theflyingpenguin.com/spyware-removal.shtml
Afterwards run a FULL virus scan in SAFE MODE.

Have you tested the memory? Run MEMTEST86+ at least 12 hours and see if it's stable.

Hope this helps...

Thanks! I'm seeing a bunch of errors in this Event Viewer, mainly "The ATI WDM Specialized MVD Codec service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified." I did have an ATI card in this PC years ago, I don't know why this would suddenly start freezing and/or re-booting my computer.

If you no longer have an ATI card installed you may still have the drivers and apps installed and they may be causing problems. Go to Add/Remove Programs and see if there's any ATI apps or drivers you can uninstall. You can also do a Google search for driver cleaners.

If that really IS a service, you should be able to disable it by using the Services tab in MSCONFIG. Disable any ATI services if you don't have an ATI card anymore.

Worst comes to worse, if this just started recently, you MAY get lucky and be able to fix it by using System Restore to roll the computer back to a restore point prior to the problem occuring. Because of the way system restore works I would recommend going back AT LEAST one week before you're certain when the problem started. You may need to go make even farther.

Hope this helps...

OK, stupid question: How do you do a system restore with win2k? I'm guessing it is something in the control panel.
