computer keeps freezing up

seems whenever i do heavy io (like transfering files on my lan) my computer freezes. this has happen in both win2k and rh9. It is hard to replicate this issue because sometimes it is fine. system also locks up randomly, say if it has been idle for long.

I thought it migh be cheapo fry's ram causing the problem so i pulled that out and now have a 512mb infineon chip. system is not overclocked and has an upgraded hs/fan, running a 900mhz duron on an abit kt7. nothing special in the computer, single hd and a cdrw drive. blowhole on top and on the side. voodoo 3 pci video, ~4yr old antec 300w ps.

at this point, the only thing i can think of is getting a newer, stronger ps. maybe this sparkle ps?

Sparkle Power seems to be a decent-quality brand, that's worth a shot if you suspect your PSU at all. Also, you might check your motherboard's capacitors to see if any of them seem to be bulging and/or leaking electrolyte, run an in-depth hard-drive diagnostic using the manufacturer's utility, and try Memtest86 overnight to see if your RAM tests out ok.

Motherboards can get flaky and fail, too... if you wanted to replace it, an ECS K7S5A Pro wouldn't cost much, and will take your PC133 memory too. Here's what I found at SiS's site for Linux drivers, by the way: link (the chipset on the K7S5A's is an SiS chipset).

Hope that helps a little 🙂

I popped in an antec sl350, system still froze in win2k. no heavy i/o activity, I just let the system sit idle. all the caps on the abit board are fine. i had the abit cpu temp program running, when it froze the cpu temp was 33C and the case temp was 30C.
