Computer keeps freezing minutes after startup

I am having trouble with my computer freezing just a few minutes after startup. I can not do anything, not even ctrl+alt+del. When I restart it, I get a stop error code 0xc000000e. If I come back a day later, it will start up fine but freeze again after a few minutes. I have booted up into safe mode but the same thing happens.

I have unplugged the second hard drive, tried a different connector on the motherboard for the OS drive. I have tried the startup repair with the Windows 7 disk but did not find any problems. I have ran CCleaner and it found several registry problems but fixing them did not help anything. I also tested the memory and it was fine. I was thinking a bad hard drive but it freezes exactly the same time every time.

I am also having another problem, could be related. When I set the first boot device to cd in the bios, I have to restart it twice before I am able to boot from the cd. And if I try to startup Windows with no cd in the drive, it will just sit at the screen where you boot from the cd with dots going across the screen.

If possible I would like to avoid doing a fresh install.

That code ia a boot error (obviously). Do you have a recovery disk to fix it? or if you have access to another computer which I'm guessing you do sine your on this forum, make one from there and use it. Good luck!

Is your SSD plugged into the first SATA port on the motherboard? If not, try swapping the cable to this port.

You may also need to update the firmware on your SSD. Seems I've read that a lot of OCZ Vertex 2 drives have had issues like this.

I have tried to clear the cmos and did not help.

The drive was not plugged into the first SATA port so I switched it to the first one and I get the message saying smart command failed and would not boot at all. It also did the same thing on the second port. It does boot on the third port but freezes minutes after startup.

I have been using the SATA 2 ports so I tried a SATA 3 port and it still froze minutes after startup.

When this problem first started, it would work for about 10 minutes, then freeze. Now within a minute or two, it will freeze.

If I do a complete reinstall of Windows, will it fix the boot issue? I kind of thought that a boot problem would be hardware related.

Before even thinking about reinstalling, use your install DVD to boot to the Windows Recovery Environment.

When WinRE starts, select “Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows…” and select your Windows installation.

When the System Recovery Options dialog opens, select Command Prompt.

From the Command Prompt, run chkdsk with the following switches: chkdsk C: /x /v /f /r /b

(Note: running chkdsk with these switches is very intensive, so be patient.)

When chkdsk finishes, run System File Checker from the same Command Prompt: sfc /scannow

When SFC finishes, reboot and test how Windows functions.

Okay, I ran the chkdsk with the switches you mentioned and found no problems. How long should that take to run the chkdsk? The reason I ask is because it only took 2 seconds to complete.

Then I tried to run the SFC but it said I had a startup repair pending and needed to restart and try again. So I restarted and tried again and it said the same thing.

There are some things that are bugging me. While booting from the Windows install cd, and I select the Windows version to repair, it shows the location as d: Local Disk when it should be C:

WinRE doesn't neccessarily use the same drive letter assignments that you see in Windows Explorer or Disk Management. If WinRE shows the system as D:\ then run: chkdsk D: /x /v /f /r /b

After chkdsk finishes, try running SFC again and see whether you get the pending startup repair message. I'm not sure why you're seeing that, unless you'd previously attempted an automated repair that was unsuccessful.

Well I figured out the problem. I took it to a local computer shop and he told me that the file system was corrupt. So I just had to reinstall Windows and it does not freeze anymore.

But I am still having some problems. Maybe I should create a new thread for this but there is one issue during the boot process. If I put the cd drive as the first boot device in the bios, with a cd in the drive, I have to restart it again before it will boot from the cd. If there is no cd in the drive and I try to start Windows, it will not get past the screen where you boot from the cd. I have to go back into the bios and put the hard drive as the first boot device. I was hoping reinstalling Windows would fix this problem but nope.

Another problem I am having is the top two ports on my motherboard do not work. I had my backup drive connected to one of the top ones and it would not show up under my computer. But it would show up during the boot process and HWMonitor recognized it as well. I am guessing the only way to fix this is to return the motherboard to Gigabyte since it should be under warranty.

I would RMA the board before anything else happens or it starts taking out components like your hard drive. Yes, motherboard can eat drives.
