computer keeps freezing after fresh install

I just recently reinstalled Windows and it keeps freezing on me. some times it will unfreeze after five minutes or so, and sometimes I have to manually restart the computer because it is completely froze. I do not know this is relevant or not, but when I hit ctrl+ alt +delete it beeps twice after I hit delete, in task manager comes up in the task bar and does not show up on the screen. when I try to bring up task manager again it shows up on the screen and freezes immediately. it usually freezes when I try to open a program. another thing is, when I try to open a shortcut on the desktop it brings up its properties instead of opening. I would appreciate the help.

Did you install the Chipset drivers?

Have you installed any new components? It really sounds like a IRQ resource conflict.

I can't remember if I install the chipset drivers or not. the only things that I installed are the antivirus and browsers.

If you don't have the Chipset drivers that could also be a cause of slow System response.

Was it a "Quick Restore" CD type install or a Windows CD install?

The Quick Restore should probably have the drivers.

You'll need to make sure you have the Chipset drivers installed in that case. This will probably solve your problem.

How about download HijackThis, run it, and post the text from the log in this thread. Maybe that'll help us see what the problem is.

Also, what brand of antivirus are you using?
