Computer just hangs @ Windows98 Startup "Splash Scrn"???

Hello, I am working on a friends computer that she just uses for invoicing. Its a Pentium 233, old yes, but works for what they need it for. Anyway, she screwed it up last friday by defragging and something else that she cannot remember and it caused it to crash. Wouldnt even go to safe mode, scrn was just black. Anyway, she said yes go ahd and do what you need to do to it.

So I go for the ol' format c: and figure we'll be good 2 go from a cln drive. Well, i formatted the drive, in the process of loading Win98SE and its going great, no error msg's come up and during one of the reboot processes it does it just hangs at the 98 splash screen and doesnt go any further. No error msg's, no blue screens to indicate a problem, but it halts there. I even formatted it and started over agn and the same thing. I repalced the ram with some which I knew was good, (had another 1 w\ similar problem so i tryed that, but it didnt solve the problem either. Any suggestions as to what's going on with it? Thanks for any insight you can give!

Most issues with Win98 hanging on reboot stem from a bad Video
(usually Legacy) driver.

You may want to check the BootLog.txt file located in the Root of the drive
to see what the offending driver may be.

Hey Lilithtech, How do I ck that file to see if it's bad and where do I get the new 1 to replace it with if it is?
This is a new one on me I don't know how to ck the Windows legacy file(s) or replace them. I'll make notes so I will for the next time this happens however.lol Thx a bunch!

I had a similar problem when installing Win98SE onto a P2 300 machine....installed Win98 instead and it worked fine.....again had a problem with a Celeron 500 + Voodoo3 3000....had no idea that the video driver could cause a lockup there!....very handy info!

What Graphics Card is it? If it is a mainstream manufacturer that is still around then goto their website....otherwise goto www.download.com or even www.x3dfx.com for 3dfx stuff.

With the new install can you get into safe mode? I agree this sounds like a video driver problem but it could also be other drivers. If you can get into safe mode, then go to the Device Manager and completely remove the video drivers. This should let it successfully boot with the generic driver. Then try to find a new driver. If this isn't it, look for other drivers that may be suspect.

The best way to attack the problem would be in Safe Mode as KenGr suggested.
If you can boot into Safe Mode, change the video driver to Standard VGA.
Right-click destop, Properties \ Settings \ Advanced \ Adapter

If you can not boot to safe mode, try installing the OS with the Command Line switch
(requires you to boot from a bootdisk) CDRom drive> setup.exe /p g=3

This will allow you to see the drivers being loaded and which one it is hanging on.
For a list of Command Line switches for Win98, at the command line type setup.exe /?
