My brother wants to go to school for Computer/IT and the like. They assigned his major as Telecommunications, is this right? I am clueless as to the fields but when I was in school, it was IT systems or Computer Engineering or the like. Just making sure he's on the right path!

Any advice or pointers for him?

It depends on what the school offers and what he signed up for. If that's wrong have him talk to some Dean or something and they can clear it up/fix the problem.

That's what they call it in Georgia now both in the Schools and the Law (State Super DMCA Bill 867 is called the Telecommunications Law by the Politicians)

He's going to a 2 year school and this is what the school signed him up for when he asked for a computer major. I'm just making sure they aren't tossing him into a worthless field and computer degrees are actually called telecommunications.

Instead of asking people on the internet who have no idea, tell him to ask the school!

When did the people here become so rude? He DID ask the school and they said this has "similar" coursework. All I am asking is if this is an Industry shift or is he getting the shaft. I mean how dam hard is it, if you don't know, DON'T REPLY. SIMPLE!

It's a vague question, and we are not qualified to answer. He should be asking more questions.

No matter what degree he ends up, you should advise to get some real work experience at the same time. He might apply for techie job at computer store. Real world experience always help.

To answer your question, I don't believe there is any "trend" or "shift" in renaming any degrees to Telecommunications. Telecommunications is a more specific field. It's almost certainly not the same as Computer Science or Computer Engineering.

It's not clear if this is worthwhile or not. It could be just a vocational program that has basic computing classes with a focus on networking ("IT" stuff, a 2 year program probably), or this could be a specialization option within Electrical Engineering (but then why not just do EE?).
