Computer is still running slow

I ran Ad-aware and removed 203 objects. I then ran Spybot, and removed 43 objects. Spybot said that it could not remove something because it was running (even though I was in Safe Mode), and it asked to do a scan after it rebooted. I said yes. I then rebooted and it did its scan, but it found nothing. I then ran the AVAST boot scan and it found one virus. Thought that would be the final thing to finally bring it back up to speed, but that did not happen. So, I ran "chkdsk /r" to see if it could repair any bad sectors on the hard drive. I do not know the results of that yet.

If it is still running slow, is there anything else I can do besides reformatting and reinstalling everything?

One thing to do is to go to the spywarewarrior forum---download a copy of hijack this--run it--and post the log file back---an expert log reader can often find the
nasties scans miss.

You could also go to the Kaspersky web site and run a free on line scam---Kaspersky does have a better detection rate than avast.

Lastly, your computer security is rather lax if you have that much malware---you can go to the software section of anand tech and read the consoladated security post or find
John's malware guide---and learn to protect your self--or you will be facing this problem in future even assuming you can find what is hurting you now without nuking your hard
drive.

Also, consider using a Limited account for normal daily stuff like web, IM and email. It's a little more hassle sometimes, but an ounce of prevention... 🙂 yeah.

And if you've ever use linux then you're already accustomed to running as non-root, which is somewhat like running a win box on a limited account.
