First the keyboard wouldnt work, i rebooted, it still didnt work. so i turned off I/O and reset the CMOS.
when i pressed the power button....nothing

the mobo LED was still lit however. so i took it apart, cleaned, redid cpu thermal grease......nothing.

so i did a test on both mobo and PSU and now i'm more baffled.

ok i have done 2 things and now i'm more baffled

first i pulled up mobo close to my computer. on my pc i took off the 24 pin and 4 pin connectors only and hooked them to my g/f's mobo.
i then plugged in the power switch from my g/f's case, turned it on and all the fans whirled.

here is what baffles me. on my g/f's PSU, i did the old paperclip test and guess what....the fan whirled just fine.

so now i have to ask...is the paperclip test trustworthy? could it mean that even though the fan is on that somehow it isnt distributing power to turn on the mobo?

so to sum up again, first i had nothing...hooked up another psu and at least had power to fans as it apparantly turned on. so naturally it would seem to be the PSU but the paperclip test worked and i was always told thats how you tell if your PSU is dead or its something else.....since i didnt fully hook up that mobo to my working PSU to see if it would boot up windows i'm not really for sure now.

i dont want to try again cause my high end rig was a real pain just to hook up those 2 power connectors....i have my wiring very tidy and it would take me several hours to hook up this other mobo completely and then get my rig back to the way it is now so thats why i'm here :)
thanks in advance for advice

If you want to check the PSU the best thing to do is swap out the PSU with another one. Your test did nothing more then show that the PSU turns one. It doesn't mean its actually supplying the proper power to the system. Swapping out the PSU is the best way to check which item is at fault. Do a full swap with your GF's PC. Put your PSU in her system and her PSU in yours. If hers powers on and yours doesn't then your board is dead. If its vise versa then your PSU is dead.

thaks for reply, but i did partially swap them, ran 4 pin and 24 pin to it and it turned on, it didnt do anything with the old psu. so i'll assume its the psu cause i literally spent several hours getting the inside of my rig so tidy you cant hardly see any wires, so yeah, thats alot of trouble to do a complete swap
