Alright, so, a girl from work asked me to look at my computer, and I am stumped.

All jumpers and cables in the system are good, I double and triple checked this for sure. Whats happening is using a bootable recovery disc, I can install win98 and boot into it, and everything works fine, I can run anything on the hard drive, and so on.

However, if I try and pop a disc in, it freezes on the autoload, and if I drop a non-bootable cd in, it freezes when I try and open explorer.

The drive has to be fine, Imean, it successfully installs software from dos mode, I can't believe windows would have an issue with it from a clean install, I assumed that her win98 install beforehand had fubared something.

Any suggestions? I've tried another cd-rom in it's place, also, and that too did the exact same thing. I've tried swapping ide channels, location of master/slave configs, and so on, and solved nothign so far:(

I used to get that with '98, it's been a while but IIRC disabling autoplay fixed it, at least for me. Good luck.

Do you have the latest chipset & IDE drivers for the system?
Do you have the latest firmware for the drive?

What motherboard and chipset do you have? More than likely you need to get the right chipset drivers installed. I had the problem often with windows 98 and VIA chipsets.
