Computer installs sound card, but it doesn't appear in Multimedia Properties

Got Win98SE, and a Cmedia 8738 PCI card. For whatever reason, Windows now won't fully recognize it as a sound card. It is in the Sound,Multimedia category in Hardware Profile, with no exclamation mark or anything wrong, but in the Multimedia section in Control Panel, it says that there's no audio hadware available.
I've tried the drivers from Cmedia's page and the ones at Windowsupdate (WDM drivers from both) - they all install just fine, but the thing still isn't making any sound. Suggestions appreciated.

Dang...tried the whole remove it, uninstall, etc...no effect. Then I tried the VXD drivers. That worked. Doing that never even occurred to me - it's like my mindset that if a new version is out, and it's proven to be good (the WDM's worked nicely on my own 98SE system) then why go to something older. Weird. Guess my dad's system is due for a reinstall anyway - Media Player freezes when it's run in full mode, but not in the Compact Mode; there's a few other things futzed up too.
Thanks for the suggestion. 🙂
