Computer illiterate and need help

I want to purchase a computer, but I am completely ignorant on even the questions I am supposed to ask.

First of all, ask yourself what you're going to be using it for.

Next I would go to Dell (unless you have a person you trust that is knowledgeable about computers to go with you to a store for a purchase) and order one from Dell on-line.

1) What is it use?..(don't short sight yourself here...anything you can see yourself doing on it...I have seen people once they get familiar with computers want to do all the latest stuff and I feel bad breaking it to them that the machine can't handle it.)

2) What is your price range? 500-700? lower?...

3)How long until you plan to upgrade to a new computer?

I would look at getting a bargain duron or celery system if price is around 500-800 range.

I would look at the for sale site for used system if you want it in the 200-500 range.

I would purchse dell if you have money to burn and really are uncomfortable in troubleshooting problems that may arise. Dell "award winning service"!!! For most here a waste of money. I usually can put together a comparable pc buy buying parts and beat dell prices by 200 dollars...so whether it says free or not you basically are paying around 200 for service and dell profit (which is in the 15-20 percent range)...catch free shipping deals!
