machine a)
1 20 gig hd
1 10 gig hd

machine b)
1 8 gig hd

I want to swap hds on these machines, i want machine a) to have the 8 gig and machine b) to have the other two hds, whats the easiest way to do this? will i have to reformat everything?

machine a) has win98se and win2k on dual boot, win98se resides in the 20 gig and win2k resides in the 10 gig

machine b) has linux and win98se in two separate partitions.

thanks for your help.

if you know how to TAKE the hd out and PUT IT BACK into another machines then it will be easy.

to me, all you need to do is TAKE BOTH HDs out from machine A OUT, take the 8GB HD out from Machines B out and put it INTO machine A then put the two HDs into Machine B. That will do nothing by just boot up normally on those machines.

Provided you have similiar configuration on those two machine:
-- Using IDE for harddrive
-- enough room for two HDs on Machine B

then i think it will solve your problem coz basically swapping harddrive like you say just MOVE the HD from one machine from another machine which do not need to reformat.

hope this will help

yeah i know how to put in hardware and to take it out, but i was wandering if there was going to be conflicts with the bios and other hardware that i have in one machine and not in the other.

Just keep in mind that if you have dif stuff in the two machines the os's will recognize this at boot. You might want to unistall the hardware prior to the swap. The files should be all good though. Good luck. I don't think would apply to linux though, but make sure you have the drivers for the modem/sound/video etc al.

Win2k and Linux will probably throw an absolute shit fit if the two machines are pretty different - IE going from an Intel BX chipset in one, to something like a Via chipset in the other.

My gut is telling me that you would save more time in the long run reformatting up front and then re-installing.

Yep... The HAL won't like that a bit.
Save the data - fdisk the drives... Lot's cleaner that way.

like i said what's configuration are those on your both machines?

motherboard?
videocard?
soundcard?
etc.....

it's better if you have all the drivers of your devices. :)
