OK so I built this computer for my brother in-law during x-mas. He's now having problems with it and brought it back to me and I can't seem to figure out what the deal is with it. Here are the specs to the comp:

-AMD Athlon XP 2200 CPU
-Abit NF7 MOBO
-Corsair 512MB memory
-40G Samsung HD.
-Using all on-board video and sound and such. Nothing else attached to the PCI slots or anything.

Now to the problem. It's basically shutting off after about maybe 10-20min being on. Once it randomly shuts off you can't turn it back on until after power is cut-off completely then turned back on to it. I took this as a sign of maybe the power supply, so I replaced it with a brand new 350W power supply. Still happens. Then I'm thinking ok maybe it's overheating, and this is where I starts getting fuzzy for me. What is a typically CPU temperature in F. It was running around 136-142F...with sometimes hitting 145F. Is that too hot? Do you think it could be overheating and shutting itself off? The comp is practically brand new with hardly anything on it, so I know it's not a virus or anything of that nature. My other thought is bad memory, but my dad and I put a good stick we had lying around that works in another computer in this one and it still happened. So I''m now thinking it might be a bad MOBO or something on it causing it. Any ideas? Suggestions? would be helpful and great!

Yes that is too hot.

Are you using a copper or copper/aluminum heatsink? Did you make sure to use thermal paste?

Yeah I used thermal paste and the fan the AMD came with. At least I think it's the fan it came with. I bought the CPU from a friend and we used that heatsink. Maybe it wasn't the heatsink it came with. Either way I will probably go to the store and get a new heatsink to better cool it down and add some new thermal paste.

What is the optimal temperature a CPU should be running at? Also it will just shut the entire computer down if it gets too hot? Oh and I don't think I'm using neither a copper or aluminum heatsink. It's just a black plastic one it looks like?!?

Yes it will shutdown. Either by thermal safety's built into the mb, or by electric runaway causing a short circuit (potential damage).

There is no such thing as a plastic heatsink - maybe it is anodized steel? Do a google image search for "heatsink" and link us one that looks simialr to the one you have now. Or better yet, if you have a webcam or digital camera, snap us a pic...

Maybe your friend sold you a P100 heatsink!
;)

If your going to buy one of the bigger heatsinks,
check the clearance around the CPU socket first.
