COMPUTER HELP NEEDED NOW! DISK READ ERROR?

One of my computers here at home seems to have a problem. Every time I turn it on, it has a DISK READ ERROR and asks me to hit control alt delete to restart. It will not load Windows XP at all. I have no idea what happened or why, and I need some help as to what I need to do to get this fixed. It's a P4 1.6A with an Asus P4B266 motherboard, 512MB ram. The hard drive is an 80GB Maxtor. I have never had any problems with this, and I really have no idea what's going on. HELP?

Its posible that your hard disk Drive has gone bad, data has been lost, or partition table wiped out(due to virus or other things). But first you might want to check your cables making sure that they are all secure. Check bios setting etc.

What do I need to check in my BIOS? I am not the best with computers to be honest, I checked the connections and everything looks fine

I can load the Windows XP cd to reformat, but before I do that I wanna know if there is ANY other possibility? I have no idea what has happened but I really do not wanna lose everything I have saved. Help anyone?
