Computer help. AMD vs Intel. Final Decision on Cpu+MB

I am in the midst of finishing a computer which i have have been building. These are the parts that i have to go into the machine that i have so far
40gb Maxtor 7200rpm HD 8.7ms seek time
SB live X-gamer 5.1
Labtec Pulse Speakers
Teac 1.44 Floppy
MS Intellimouse Explorer
Antec sx840 w/ 400watt ps
Pionner 16x dvd
Plextor 16X10X40
New 19in ev910 Gatway moniter (sent it to me for free-order got screwed up last year)

Now that i have all these parts i need to put it together but i am running into a wall. A big one. I still have to get a Motherboard,RAM,Videocard,CPU. This is where im stuck. I dont need this computer till around Sept.22 for college but want it build before then with all bugs worked out. I was stone solid on getting a AMD until i saw intels price cuts on the 26th. Now im swinging intel(i know u all hate me). If i do still go the AMD road, what do u recommend. I was thinking
1)1.4ghz palamino or tbird
Epox 8k7a
Crucial 256mb
Now if i go intel which i dont know much about i was looking at
2)p4 1.8ghz
Asus P4T
2 x 128mb Rambus (Which manufacturer is the best.Was looking at Mushkin but was expensive)
I know this message is getting long but finally, a videocard. I took back the G3 hoping for a radeon2. ANd to tell u the truth i dont care much about the res. As long ads its at least 800x600. I dont complain.
TO sum everything up, I have $1100-1200 to still spent so money is not an option. I will also NOT BE OCING. Well i hope i gave enough info to warrent some replies..Thanx

Have you checked the latest benchmarks for the p4 vs palamino? That's where I'd start. You're lucky, price isn't an option. Until I heard intel is phasing out the use of Rambus, I'd have said go Intel, but that makes things interesting. Will Rambus get even more expensive when demand drops?

Check the benchmarks, and decide for yourself. This is proably going to turn into an intel vs amd flamewar

I'd go Athlon just because RAMBUS is a dead end...

Do a search on the forums. You'll find tons of AMD vs. Intel threads. You should also read some of Anand's CPU articles. They will give you tons of information. Even with Intel's price cuts AMD is still cheaper. And with AMD you don't have to put up with RAMBUS.

Both Epox and ASUS make good boards so which ever route you decide to take your motherboard will be good. I can't help you too much with the video card since the Radeon2 isn't out yet. But you can't go wrong with a GeForce3.

BTW are you serious about only running at 800x600? And on a 19" monitor? If you have one that big you should use something like 1280x1024. Everything you do will look MUCH BETTER, trust me.

Even though I own a P4, and love it, I would recommend getting the athlon. Then you can spend more on other items such as your video card, or memory. RDRAM is still quite expensive compared to PC133 or even DDR SDRAM right now. I payed $110 for 256 mb PC800 RDRAM a couple of weeks ago. You can get the same amount of pc2100 ddr sdram for as little as $35 (quoted from www.pricewatch.com). Both the p4 and athlon have their own advantages and disadvantages, just read reviews on both, look at some benchmarks, and decide for yourself.

get a new sound card since epox and sblive dont like each other much (its a person thing hehe).
get a ACOUSTIC EDGE or a SANTA CRUZ. i have a acoustic edge and i like it alot 🙂

If you have to go with a mobo right this moment, go with an AMD Athlon 1.4 GHz processor with PC2100 DDR RAM, an AMD 760 Chipset, all on either a GA-7DXR or Abit KG7 motherboard.

Those motherboards are especially good in overall performance strength. I personally bought something just like that mobo recently.

However I'm waiting for something more important. It's called the nForce (it?s a chipset). Since you have a lot of money to spend, let me give you some advice.

First: Buy that mobo I mentioned above.
Second: Find someone you know that can remove and/or install motherboards.
Third: Once you find someone, have him or her find you a motherboard with an nForce chipset when the nForce debuts in 2 months.

I suggest buying the best motherboard now and then buying the nForce in 2 months because you have $1000-1200 to spend.

By the way, if you do get a motherboard with an nForce chipset in 2 months, you can sell your Gigabyte or Abit motherboard to partially compensate for the expense.
