Computer Hardware no longer excites me..... :(

There used to be a time when the thought of computer hardware used to give me a hard one. I would spend endless hours configuring the perfect system. A system which for the most part is out of my hands but I could still use some of the smaller stuff. I would configure these huge ass machines with gigs of ram and loads of processors and get an equivalent response to that of having sex.

These days that feeling is all gone. Computer hardware no longer excites me. Is it due to the fact that the industry is lacking innovation or is at a point where innovation isnt unique enough to give us results. I remember when Nvidia released the original GeForce. Boy did that give me a major woodie. Then next came the GeForce 2, and then the gts2, then the gts2pro and then the gts2ultra. Each one giving me a slightly higher level of satisfaction. And then came the GeforceMX series and I went limp. Since then the show of force from the GeForce3's and the GeForce 4's have no effect. It seems I am immune to the charms of newer faster technology.

Its not limited to video cards only. Take the Megahertz race. I used to get so excited over a new processor coming out every two weeks. Then we suddenly reached 1Ghz. Though It seems like ages ago, but it wasnt that long ago. We hit the magical 1Ghz mark and everyone was shouting "Yahoo". Then the market turned south but yet processors still gained speed. We now crossed the 2Ghz mark and frankly I dont give a rats ass that we are now past the 2.4ghz range. It just doesnt excite me any more.

Its like Heather Locklear at age 60. I am sure she still will be hot but it just isnt special enough to get excited over.

What are your thoughts on this?

TGG

<---- heading to bed.. hoping that Heather Locklear wont mind me fapping to her tonite.

no longer excites me either. i realized i dont need the fastest card out there since i'm not a computer gamer but rather console. GF2 GTS is ok for UT, the only pc game i play. and my current setup is pretty quick for the stuff i dont considering i'm not a programmer or anything. just a regular college student who does nothing extraordinary with computers. so for the most part, i'm done upgrading and buying stuff for my computer coz it sure isnt worth the time and money.

I've been feeling the same way since about the second day I worked for Gateway. When you get to see every single iteration of processor/video card/hard drive/whatever things start to lose a bit of the fascination they once held. I used to only see jumps from 266mhz to 700mhz. Or from a TNT2 Ultra to a GeForce2 Ultra. When I worked for Gateway, anytime a new product came out we had it there on the sales floor. Everything lost a bit when you couldn't really tell the difference between a 900 and a 1000 processor, or between a GF2 Ultra and a step above or below (not counting the 2fps more or less, I mean the major technical leaps)

I killed my excitement for computer parts and now they are just another tool that I have a slightly higher than the average person's knowledge of. It's not bad or good. I can't get excited walking through Best Buy anymore, but I'm also not blowing huge chunks of money on the newest, most bleeding edge products.

<< This should bring back some excitement. >>

Minendo... I'll find that extremely amusing when the equivalent of a glory hole gets put up on the net, and the only people that use it are the 500+ lb people lining up for anonymous pseudo-sex

Same here. It gets kind of tiring. I started losing interest when the Geforce 4 *repetitive naming* came out and when CPU's at the 1ghz mark started being considered slow...

while i'm not really a hardware freak, i think you guys are missing out... i mean the stuff is so cheap these days... there's never been a better time to be an enthusiast, imo. it used to be that a top of the line computer would run 3000+. now... you could get one for around 1500-2000.

You know the ONE thing that excites me in the computer industry these days...

APPLE..

Yes I said APPLE. They have long been a technlogy leader. The PC's have long been following Apple's or in this case "Steve Jobs" lead.
Its the only thing that excites me.

My rig is a Tbird 750 with a Radeon VE. I was this close to upgrading to an 1800xp, kt333 mobo, etc.. when I thought to myself, "what's the point, really?"
Not like I can't do everything I need on this machine anyway.

Gonna use the money to buy some Riedel wine glasses and a Bunn coffee maker. :p

well don't forget that what got him the lead wasn't exactly innovative either...

Darn, I came into this thread again to post something to that extent, but I still want to post it anyways.

Think about your computer now. The processor/RAM/mobo/HD/sound card/modem/ethernet card are probably very adequate for what you are doing in everyday life... even video games. The graphics card is probably adequate too since the latest games only take advantage of GF2 levels of technology. So what's to get excited about? Yes, you can buy a new card or processor... but what is it going to get you? The tech you should be checking out now are the consoles (if you like games). Those are the games that aren't held back by years old technology. They know exactly how much power they have to play with and don't need to leave out some features so the person running a 5 year old video card can still play.

iono, if Transmeta or Apple, heck even Matrox comes out with something that'll totally crush everything there is right now, i'd be pretty excited :)

I just have some craving for a dual Athlon rig. And I want a computer system dedicated for entertainment only on a nice big screen TV.

Other than those, I don't think that I have much use for computer hardware.

Not to mention that I get pretty tired of playing with hardware easily. I like to upgrade often, but it is just not my thing to touch hardware components for more than 2 days in a row.

BTW, I *am* quite excited about the mobile market, though. :)

I drool at the new breeds of PocketPCs and Crusoe-based computers like Sony PictureBook.

I know the feeling well but after thinking it over decided that it wasn't the hardware I was
sick of but rather clueless end users. I decided to change direction and go for MCSE... and fell in love all over again :) At some point the only computers I will be building from scratch will be
for my own enjoyment :D

apple blows, the technology they use isnt anything to get excited about all they do is wrap there products in designer colors and charge you 2x the amount it would normally cost you.

They also rather bore me now. It used to be my big thing but now I really just don't care that much.

I don't know, I always feel my PCs are slow and outdated. I upgrade on a regular basis, every time smth worthy comes out.

How is GF2 different from GF4? Of course, I know it is, but basically it's the same. When people changed their 2MB ATI Mach64 and could get OpenGL ATI Rage128, they were excited. It was the excitement of seeing brand new 3D technology, never seen before. And how is the Rage128 different from Radeon? Mainly speed-wise, IMO. There're huge improvements, but it doesn't excite you coz it's the same OpenGL.

Bored with GF2? It's graphics power is fully utilized only now. In fact, in certain games it became rather slow. I don't feel the lack of enthusiasm, I feel the hardware progress slowdown. We have to wait for the new, demanding apps to be out before there will be an actual need to upgrade.
