Computer Hardware Disposal

I've got a bunch of old parts (hard drives, cards, etc) sitting around that I just want to get rid of. How and where am I supposed to dispose of this stuff?

We have an electronics recycling facility that accepts it here. You should see if they have such a place near you.

I would normally recommend Amandi, formerly Envirocycle, however, since Amandi bought Envirocycle, I have had a lot of trouble getting ahold of any employee there so as to order a UPS shipping label - $25 gets you a UPS shipping label good for a box with a total weight of up to 69lbs.

Theres actually a lot of places that will pay you for old computer parts. They recover gold and silver off them.

I wouldn't think that there'd be much gold in anything but the pins of CPUs.

I've got all kinds of crap that doesn't work anymore - hard drives, motherboards, VCRs, printers, phones, keyboards, and other electroincs, probably over 100lbs of it. I'd like a place like Envirocycle to take it, because they at least try to recycle what they can of the various parts. Some place that just recovers gold and silver might just dump the rest of the stuff in a landfill anyway.

To my knowledge there is a lot of precious metal in old hard-drives and other comptuer components. Im not an expert on it, but I know thats what a lot of companies do with old hardware and electronics.

With a lot of the throw-away computer parts that end up in India, you have people over there that actually strip the PCB?s for the copper. No joke.

Name 25.

Come to northern Illinois and I will take you to a few.

Name a few.

Theres one in St. Charles that I have taken stuff to, cant seem to find a website for it though. I believe there is another in Chicago too, which is about an hour away. They dont give you much, but if you have a TON of crap to get rid of, its a good way to make a few bucks. As one of the above posters mentioned about copper, they pull the copper out of the hard-drives, floppy-drives, PCB and stuff. They also recover any gold/silver that they can from it.

HERE is a link to a PBS video news clip about the e-waste in India.

As it quite rightly points out in that clip, it's hardly feasible to recycle electronic waste in countries such as America. The claim that there are companies in America that carry out this recycling and so say ?pay? for it, in reality most likely make money from exporting it to countries such as India.

Exactly.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

I was just looking for the easiest way to get rid of it all. I don't even know what of it works and what does not. Never used Craigslist and I'm not even sure if there is one for my area.

Around here there's an electronics waste section at the dump that will take a car-load of e-crap for $5.00 (+$10/crt or something like that). That's what they tell me anyway, I've been too lazy to actually haul all my crap down there.

Go to the dump and see. If they don;t have a place for it try and sell it. The crap that's too broken to sell can be sent to Dell or HP, they have a recycling program.

i have sent boxes and boxes of crap to dell thru my old work. i'm not sure exactly how it worked but dell would give him (my boss) boxes and shipping labels, we would stuff them full of unrepairable parts from computers, laptops, etc and would drop it at UPS.. basically to us it was a good way to get rid of garbage for free, one time we sent them back ~300 dell magazines lol.. from collecting them. we have sent some things that i can't tell you about on this forum too lol.
