Computer hangs on first WinME screen K7s5a

My computer worked fine until I decided to change to round cables. I don't think it's the cables. I upgraded the BIOS on my K7s5a mb in hopes that it would allow me to run at 100/133, I have a 1.2 duron and 256 of Crucial pc2100 ddr and a K7s5a mb. Well first a blade on my HSF died so I replaced it with an 80mm fan (higher cfm, lower db rating) and a fan adapter. Before anyone asks, yes the cpu temp is now higher by a few degrees, I get about 105-107 F at idle and maybe 109 F or so at load. The system inconsistently hangs on the first WIN ME screen at boot up. The first problem was windows would restart or shut down, but the computer would not. That seemed to be fixed by upgrading mb drivers and making sure the vga vxd file was loaded before the graphics card driver. But now like I said, the system hangs at the Win ME screen (not all the time, but a lot) . I did a clean re install of windows several times, even making sure to reformat and re partition the disk prior to the reinstall, but it still hangs. Any ideas? Thanks.

Well ... it worked, you changed cables, now it doesn't work ... HOW ON EARTH can you assume it isn't the cables' fault?

Rounded IDE cables that splice the ribbon up into multiple strands dramatically decrease signal integrity. Plus, most of these cables are way longer than the allowed 45 cm (18" for the Empire).

By far not everything that is being sold as an IDE cable actually is one.

Ok, I'll try changing them back and see what happens...

I changed the fan on the heatsink and the cpu runs a little hotter like 45c/ 109F but it's still only about half of the AMD max. Could that have anything to do with it? It's either that or the newest BIOS flash. Would clearing the CMOS help?

Sis735 chipset does not like to be run asych. I have the K7S5A. You need to run it 100/100 with the Duron.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking, so I kind of resolved myself to run it at 100/100, and forgo my pc2100 as pc1600 in order to keep stability. Any idea why the system would hang sometimes at the windows screen? It more than hangs, it locks up....
