I'm installing windows98se on a SCSI hard drive I had just got not long ago. Previously I had a IDE hard drive, everything else in the system is the same as it was. I suspect there's something wrong with my SCSI configuration. This is the first time I'm working with a SCSI hard drive as the only drive in the system.
System specs:
-MSI 6163pro
-Cel 400
-Radeon 32DDR
-SbLive
-3Com PCI Modem
-Adaptec 2940UW (SCSI ID: 7)
-Plextor 40x (50pin) (SCSI ID: 3)
-Imation 8x20 (ext 50pin) (SCSI ID: 4)
-Seagate Barracuda 18, model ST118273LW, 68pin (SCSI ID: 0)
After doing a (probably redundant) low level format of the hard drive, I set the boot device in the SCSI Bios to ID 3, the cd-rom drive. Then I set the motherboard BIOS to boot from SCSI. That didn't work, so I tried to set it to boot from CD-rom, and that didn't work either. Finally I noticed that during SCSI boot up, the bootable CD-rom drive is remapped to drive A:. So I set the motherboard BIOS to boot from A, and the system booted from the cd-rom drive.
I then fdisked and formated the hard drive, and started with win98se installation. The installation went as usual, until the 2nd or 3rd reboot. It's the last step of the installation (according to the steps displayed on the left), Setting up hardware and finalizing settings. In the middle of the screen there is a dialog box titled Windows 98 Setup, and the computer hangs at the 2nd item down the list, Programs on the start menu. It seemed like windows went and did the setup in the start menu, but doesn't know to move itself down to the next item on the list.
Rebooting the machine had no effect, win98 does a scandisk, then goes back to the installation process, to the same step. Then it goes through the control panel setup (time zone), then moves on to programs on the start menu, then hangs like before. The mouse cursor moves, but there's no hard drive or cdrom activity going on.
The hard drive is terminated. I have tried restarting the installation by erasing the hard drive, and run setup from the beginning. The same thing happens. The computer hangs at the exact same spot.
Any ideas??
thanks!!
