I am basically the 'go to guy' for any form of comptuer problems on our campus. At times it's kinda nice (read hot girls), but at times it's annoying (how do I open a .bmp file?). Do people even try before asking how to do something?

Yeah, but they have a brain as well.... I 'know it all' by trying it myself & figuring it out, and occasionally asking questions of my 'superiors'. It's just like this one kid in lab yesterday would call me over for every line in the lab & have me help him through it. It's like one line asked him to put his name at the top of his file, and he had to have me tell him how to type it.

<< Geek lovin chicks. :p~ What college do you attend?! >>

I didn't say geek lovin, I implied geek needing. Once I fix their comptuer, it's out the door for me :disgust:

I'm one of the computer guys of the family, I go throught the same stuff as well. When I was in college I was the "hacker" and computer genius of the class. Sigh, How I miss those days.

I'm the same way I don't mind my family asking me to fix problems but it gets kinda old when freinds and neighbors ask me to help them out all the time. People do need to get more literate with computers.

<< I wish I had the know-how to be a computer go-to guy. >>

It's pathetic, if you know how to install AIM you're the computer guy. What's most annoying is that they need to get "the best comptuer guy" to do the most mandane jobs (like run a virus scan for them), when more than likely the guy next door could do it for them as well.

<< so wait, let me get this straight, you DONT work for the school right? >>

I DO work for the school in that I'm a TA for several Comp. Sci. classes, but I DO NOT work for ITS...they have PAID people to do this work....yet people still ask me.

you got to stand your ground bud. i learned this the hard way.. all my family friends.. ohh come do this come do that.. this is what i say.. STFU!!!!!! you know why? because if there was any little thing wrong in their comp they would call me. It gets soooo time consuming and it sucks because they dont pay you. so i just try to give them some tips over the phone and thats it. In your situation i would have a kind 'word' with your superiors cuz this isnt cool...

well by superiors I mean those who know more than me & I learn from. I think you're right though in that I need to limit what I do for ppl more, but how? I can't just say "get lost, you're stuipd, I'm too smart to talk to you", I would rather do it in a more polite manner...any ideas?

what usually worked for me is that i say that im soooooo busy and after they ask that for the 50th time and i reject for the 50th time, most people get the idea. kinda like:

idiot: "Dude.. can you like fix my computer.. i shoved a screw driver in the cd-rom, and now it wont work"
you: "hey, ya that'd be great, id love to help, when is good?"
idiot: "Uhhh, now?"
you: "ohhh.. now isnt looking too good, i have to turn in the TPS reports... how about some other day, i'll let ya know when i have some free time"
idiot: "uhhhh sounds good. thanks again man, you rock!"
you: "i know, i know =)"

hehehehe, just like that! :D

This is one of those "why do people kick/ban/vote me in CS/Tac Ops/UT?" threads that's wrapped in Desktop Support dilemma coat. I'm onto you. :D

I was the "go to guy" on my old school too, most pupils (and many, if not most, teachers) went to me before asking the system administrators. Of course, I knew pretty much as much as they did (that was years ago, I know quite a bit more about computers now) and unofficially I had administrator rights (was quite easy to crack the user-profiles in the Win95 / NT4.0 days, haven't tried since).
Today it's only friends who ask me to help them and to build their computers, but that's nice in a way, since I know that they'll get hardware that works (often my old) and by me setting them up I'm sure they work (at least until they start installing new programs).
My problem is that I'm too nice to say no to people who need my help.

They want your attention if they've got a problem or question.

But if you try and make $10 building them a great system, forget it, they're gone. People have no clue about what a "quality component" is.
Folks I talk to at work would like to have a killer gaming/multimedia system costing the same as Best Buy's cheapest box. They just don't "get it" :Q
