Computer going crazy when burning cd-r/dvd-r's?

I know I'm new, but I need some help. I've been having problems with my dvd burner and it has been driving me crazy. I have a dell E510 I bought a little over a year ago.

pentium D 2.8ghz
1 gb ram
lite-on LH-20

OS: windows xp MCE

Its a decent system, and I have never had problems burning dvds or cds with it. About 2 months ago my pioneer drive started acting funny and giving me coasters. I was able to replace it about a week ago. I did a fresh install of XP about a week before I got the drive. The problem is that when I start trying to burn a disc, my cpu starts working at 50-60% and my computer bogs down big time. The burner also claims its burning at 48x, but takes over 10 minutes to finish a cd-r. I tried using a different drive but I get similar results. I used to be able to burn a dvd, browse the internet, listen to itunes, and have 2 or 3 messengers open and my computer wouldn't even come close to bogging down. What could be the problem? Any ideas? 🙁

The drive could be operating in PIO mode instead of DMA ... you'll need to go into the system BIOS to see if this is in fact the case.

Good point Captante!
Not sure if the Dell E510 will show PIO/DMA modes in the bios, if not check in the device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and then check advance settings under Primary/Secondary Channels.
If they are PIO mode change the transfer mode to DMA if available on device 0 & 1
