hi
i have just built a new pc for myself
win xp home
abit bd7
512 crucial ddram
1.8a p4
60 gb seagate barracuda 4
radeon 8500 retail
hercules fortissimo sound card
nothing is overclocked

i built this last week and its been running well, although the cpu reports to be quite hot (54-57) it is using the stock fan, i applied as3 with the "pad" that was already on the heatsink fan,
Is this to hot?

2ndly i put in rounded cables yesterday and i think i now have a new problem (i dont remember it happening before) but every once in a while the pc goes into standby, while im doing something on it (ie surfing the web), i have checked all settings in display properties, and "never" put pc on standby is selected
, the last few times it has gone to standby i ave noticed is when i turn the modem off or try to connect to the internet, i also get a stange clicking sound coming from the speakers if i try to close an ie window.
does anyone know what is causing this

thanks for any replies

First off, I would consider that temperature a little high. It was pointless to put AS3 on top of the thermal pad. AS3 is made to fill in any tiny pinholes or gaps between your heatsink and the processor core. I would suggest pulling the heatsink back off, taking off the thermal pad, and applying AS3 directly to the bottom of your heatsink. Best possible senario would be to get a new heatsink all together because the retail ones really suck. For the standby problem, you may wanna check your bios. It may have a predetermined temperature set, where if the CPU reaches that temp it will shut off or put your system in standby. For the sound problem, you may wanna check your sound card drivers, and make sure you disabled onboard sound.

you only use the thermal pad or the as3, not both. the more stuff in between your cpu and your heatsink, the hotter it will be. do what jcmkk said and only use the as3.

thanks for the reply
the temp of the cpu is always between 54-59 c and the cut off point in the bios is 70c, something else that i find stange is that if i go into pc health in bios i cannot change any of the settings and have to reboot the pc via the case button, i cant save and exit using esc or any of the + - buttons.

so let me get this straight before i do anything with the as3, i remove the heatsink, where it conects with the cpu i should remove anything that is on the underside of the heatsink so its just cpu->as3->heatsink

i downloaded the newest xp sound drivers for my card and the buzzing noise seems to have gone also onboard sound was disabled

thanks again

Since it seems like your bios is screwed up anyway, I would suggest that you update it if you already haven't. It may solve your other problems too, if you get lucky.
