Last night I tried to fix a computer for a friend of mine and it's a bit puzzling. It's an IBM Aptiva 2137-E84 with a K6-300, 2 32mb sticks SDRAM, a 4 gig HD, 24x CD-Rom and onboard everything. Upon bootup the machine will display the IBM BIOS splash screen and a second later will show the "Press F1 to enter system setup" and will not progress any further. Pressing F1 has no result. But if you boot the machine without a keyboard the splash screen will disappear and it will show the bootup dialogue showing that the memory tested okay and display the missing keyboard error and stops at that point. If you hold down a key while booting it will again switch from the splash screen to the bootup dialogue and show the keyboard error.
I tried disconnecting the HD and CD-Rom and plugging them back in. And then it worked! Got into Win98, ran scandisk, surface error check and everything was fine. Started up and shut down just fine a few times and it was operating as normal. So I figured I had it solved and shut the machine down for the night. This morning I tried booting it up again before work and it kept getting stuck at the BIOS splash screen again. WTF?!?
Anyone have any ideas to try when I get home tonight?
