Computer gets to loading windows and reboots

Hello to all,
I've got a Compaq 5000 that im working on for a friend. Here's where i'm
at: First thing I found was fan for cpu was broke! Not a good thing. computer
would not post, Figured Cpu was doa. went ahead and replaced fan, fan worked powered
up hd and cd floppy but no vid at all. Disconnected both cd roms and powered up again and now I have vid, It gets to windows loading splash then reboots. I'm guessing psu? I hate guessing so can anyone give me alittle help?
P.S. I don't have another psu to try.
Tried different memory with same result

If your CPU wasn't damaged, something may have been corrupted. If the heating caused data on your hard drive to be damaged, you may have to reload it from the ground up. Before going that far, try clearing the CMOS to see if it recognizes everything correctly when you reboot.

No guarantees, but it's a cheap experiment to see if that's the problem.

Thanks, Forgot to mention I did clear cmos and Had to reset clock. Am I wrong to assume that getting to the windows loading screen that the cpu is fine?

I don't know. It's a good start, but it could be that some small part of your CPU's logic was fried by excess heat.

The only ways I can think of to prove whether your OS is corrupted would be to try your CPU on another machine or to try to install Windows on your system with another drive. You wouldn't have to complete the installation. If you got as far as the first part before a reboot, you could be pretty confident that the system was OK.

It WAS the hard drive I reformated and reinstalled and everything was good.
