computer would freeze. off button doesnt work. i had to hold the off button for 10 sec to turn it off. when it booted up again, i got a cmos error and went into cmos setup. everything went back to default settings including time, month, and year (1/1/2004 12:00am).

it happened a couple of times this week.

I changed the cmos battery only 6 months ago.

Is my mobo dying? if not, then what?!

K7S5A's do that. They're cheap.
Using one in my 3rd backup PC,been excellent in the last 3 or 4 years of use.

You said you changed the battery, have you looked at the capacitors on the motherboard to see if any are leaking or bulging?

I had 3 of these mobo and I'll tell you what? I've never encountered the weirdest mobo problem until these ones. To make the story short, the mobo's are just piece of dung! You will need high rated PSU to make them stable and have a perfect cold boot. I highly suggest getting another cheap mobo and probably save you a lot of headaches.

I'm typing on my K7S5A right now. It usually runs great, but it's given me a CMOS checksum error at least once since I've had it (nearly 2 years). After it happened, I researched the error and found that it's a common problem. Not all K7S5A's do it. Some will simply clear the CMOS once in a blue moon, and others will exhibit the problem more often. Because I use it as an extra computer, I don't worry about it.
