Computer Frequently Crashing During Games

NilknarfLP

title says it all, the games i play are the frozen throne, css, and diablo2 lod

I don't know what kind of information to give, but if u tell me what u need then i'll try to get it

by crash you mean? locks up in the game where you need to restart?? if so, and if all games do it.. see if your cpu or video card fans are truely spinning to cool the component. try to play a game without the case cover on, put a fan aimed at your case's insides right next to the case to see if its cooling issues.. Exactly when in a game does it lock up? what time in the game.. 10 minutes? an hour?? problem could be heat if so.

the moniter turns black and sometimes i hear repeated sounds, but usually it makes periodic beeps and the green light on the moniter keeps flasing, and then i have to restart it.

the crashing seems to occur erratically, for instance it will crash after 30 minutes after being turned off for a few hours.

the cpu and video card fans are running fine, i will try using a household fan aimed into my open case, thanks

fan technique didn't work, it's crashed 3 times with the fan blowing directly into my case.

forgot to mention that sometimes it restarts by itself.

Wow this exact same problem just started happening to me. Everything used to be fine, but now all of a sudden I'm having the same problems.

In all games (FarCry, Half-Life 2, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005), the game starts up, but then the monitor goes blank and I have to restart (it doesn't quit to desktop, CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work). This didn't happen as little as a week ago, and I haven't made any hardware changes or driver updates.

Any help would be great.

EDIT: Spelling.

Mine is regular. Everytime I load a save game in FarCry or start Half-Life, my computer craps out as a described above.

I figured out the problem for me... I forgot that I had recently added another DVD+RW drive to my system. Apparently that was enough to make my power supply crap out when putting the video card under load.

My power supply has dual 12V rails, so I guess I had too much running on one rail? I don't really know anything about power supplies, but that fixed it.

1. your cpu and videa card are not hot to the touch *burning of your fingers* then?
2. can you run something like super pi at 32M which should take an hour or so.
3. what are the specs on your pc? cpu, vid, ram, mobo, OS, etc..
4. its locking up in gaming losing video.. not restarting is that correct? you can try another power supply, you can also try another video card. since its video related. your pc should pass something like memtest86+, and pass super pi.
*since its making periodic beeps. it sounds like something like the video card loses connection with the mobo to give you a beep code.. you can try reseating the card.. try looking up the code in your motherboard manual or via its website..

1. cpu heatsink is pretty warm, video heatsink is almost too hot to touch but bearable
2. crashed 2x just like it does when im playing games, then gave me an error after i got past the 20th loop on another attempt
3. cpu: amd 64 3000+ winchester stock; heatsink: zalman cu/al; vid: 9800 pro agp stock; ram: 2x512 patriot low latency; mobo: via k8t800; OS: windows 2000; hard drive: seagate IDE 80gb; sound: onboard; psu: antec sl400, came with case; 1 cdrom drive and 1 floppy
4. sometimes it restarts, but when it locks up i cant do anything except restart it manually. passed memtest with 0 errors
*ill try it

yeah I've had the same problem before, I don't know if I've gotten rid of it though, but I haven't had the problem since so. Make sure your PSU has adequate power to supply your system and card. Turn off FastWrite if it's on or turn it on if it's off. Also disable write combining which can be found in the control panel -> display -> settings -> advance -> troubleshoot. Oh and also heat could be an issue.

I disabled write combining and I think that fixed my issue since I played Republic Commando and that game has always crashed on me everytime I play. But not anymore.

I hope this helps.

I would suggest removing the heatsink/fan from your cpu and reapplying thermal grease. It really sounds like your processor is getting too hot. Also, you aren't overclocking are you? Also, are you using anything that controls the speed of your CPU fan? If so, try telling it to run faster.

oops sorry double post, meant to say that ive turned fast writes on but couldn't find write combining

i think heat may be an issue because my video card feels pretty hot. what are some applications i can use to see the temperature of my components?

its an asus board with a via chipset right? on your mobo cd there is asus pc probe... years ago i used "motherboard monitor", if that exists use it to see your temps. pc probe is a lot quicker to config though. i think your prob is your cpu or mobo making a connection to it. if super pi says non convergent in sqr its the cpu from me overclocking. but if your have that or it locking up id say your cpu is an issue some how bc your ram can pass memtest fine. your video card wasnt in a game when you crashed in super pi so i dont believe its that. for your video card temp, i never had a card that i could check with a program. so i doubt it. try reseating your cpu and re run superpi. can you try another cpu? or mount your stuff in another mobo?

ill try reseating my cpu if the problem still persists after turning on fast writes, but i dont have another cpu or mobo that would accomodate all of the stuff on this computer (our other computers are very old and have out-of-date sockets and what-not)

edit: it can't be from overclocking because everything is at stock

Are you running with the case side(s) on? If so removing them will remove some heat from your system if that is the problem. It is miserably hot outside right now.

Seen many problems with the losing video/montior signal.
It's happening to me also. I believe my CPU [and GPU for that matter]
are getting overheated. It's essetial to check temps AS PLAYING, with ASUS PC Probe, etc.
My CPU was hitting 75C temps, GPU probably out of the ballpark, very hot to touch.

Second up would be --[Under]Power Supply, then --Bad video card.
Here's another of the many topics I've seen:

75C for a p4 while gaming!!! wow. now that is a space heater.. my athlon64 newcastle hits only 53C in gaming far 4 hrs+ nonstop.
-- without another cpu or mobo we cant go much father than buying one or rmaing.. both seem to be less than a year old. id rma the mobo with saying it causes crashes. and think the cpu is ok since i never heard of a cpu go bad without cooking from extreme heat or static.
--before you replace the mobo. have you had this problem from day 1? also, does reinstalling windows solve your crashes with your current hardware if so its windows issues.
