Computer freezing when attempting to defrag

My laptop has frozen a few times when I tried to defrag the harddrive recently and I am not really sure why. Does anyone know what would cuase this? I press the defragment button and it starts and gets 10% of the way through then freezes completely and I have to hardboot it.

First you need to run the system tools first like Disk Clean Up and then ran the Chkdsk. This will require a reboot. If there is any problem in the disk it will be auto corrected by chkdsk. Then and only then you will defrag. This is a standard practice unless you defrag every week. Be aware, if you haven't defrag in the longest time, it will take at least two or three times to complete the entire defragging. There is a better defragging program from Norton's which is faster and easier to use.
