I get these 10-30 second lockups on my computer, both during game play and on the desktop (only the cursor will move). This has been going on for about 6 months. Two months ago I got an SSD and installed Win7, whereas before I used an HDD with Vista. Still the same problem, crossing two different drives and two different software environments. Driver updates don't change it. There is no malware on either platform. So it has to be a hardware problem, right? That or something with the BIOS are the only things I can think of. We can eliminate the drive as the problem, so what is then the most likely culprit? RAM?

I had a computer that had similar issues, and it turned out a bad usb port was my problem.

Huh that's interesting. My first thought would have been RAM.

I'd check the RAM first, OP. Run Memtest, see if you find anything.
