Computer freezing completely, help please!

Feel kind of stupid being a such a newb and asking this question amongst all of you gurus, but how else am I going to learn, right? 😀

Lately my computer has been acting up, although I'm not sure of the specific cause because I kind of did many modifications all at once, including installing a new video card, sound card, memory, as well as stupidly running registry editors. The computer crashed every once in awhile, and some programs ran kind of funny sporadically, but luckily I got most of it fixed. However the main problem was that the computer FELT a little hot when you touched the top of the casing near the back fan, and CD's often time felt a little too warm when taken out of the CDROM. Problem was, since I'm a complete computer newbie and this being my first real computer to muck with, I didn't know if I was being paranoid and wasn't sure if it was something to be worried about.

After I had a couple more problems with some programs not working properly, I decided to go out and get a fan hoping that it would help. I bought a CompUSA Mirrored Copper Heatsink, SKU#299253, took out the old fan, installed the new one. Well, the computer feels MUCH cooler, but all of a sudden now the computer freezes constantly, usually when the CPU percentage gets a little high like when playing a game or running two apps at once. Complete freeze, no keyboard or mouse functions, no BSOD either. The problem is I don't know if its because of the fan I just installed or if its a long term problem possibly from overheating that just now sprung up. Like I said, I'm a newbie to all of this, don't even know where to begin and really want to avoid formatting everything and starting over. I've run defrag, checkdisk, diskcleanup, AdAware, Norton, HiJack This, and SpySweeper, none of them fixed the problem.

I'm running an Athlon XP 1800+ and over the last couple of months have installed the following:
512 RAM
Radeon 9600XT
SoundBlaster 220

Welcome to the Forums pjyelton 🙂 What brand and model of power supply are you using to power that rig? Also, if you could cough up the brands & models of as many other parts as feasible (drives & how many of them, the memory modules' brand/model/speed, the motherboard itself) and whether you've tried a fresh Windows installation yet, too... could be you've made Windows freak out with that Registry tampering...

Also, you might as well take a peek at my heatsink yes/no pics, second link from bottom and see if you got your heatsink installed in the correct direction.

What are you using for heat-transfer material between the heatsink and the CPU core, by the way? How much amperage is the CPU's new fan rated for (the label on its motor will say)? If it's running off of a motherboard power fitting, and draws more than about 2 watts, I'd recommend powering it straight from your PSU using a 3-pin-to-4-pin adapter.
 
I gotta go nighty-bye here, it's 12:30AM... but besides the motherboard brand/model and the rest, it might help if you also tell me what slots the different cards are in, so I can see if there's an optimal way to use your PCI slots. Catch you tomorrow... 🙂
 
Okay, like I said, I am NOT kidding when I say I'm a newbie at this and not even sure if there is an easy way to get all of that information on model and brands of the componants without opening the thing up. Unfortunately with my wife sleeping in the room right now, opening it up won't happen until tomorrow morning sometime, so I'll try to give you as much info as I know now.

I think it is unlikely that Windows is wigging out now due to the registry editing, since this was over a month ago and except for a couple of small hiccups its more or less been running fine until now. I have several programs I got from school last year that would be impossible for me to get back like Microsoft Visual Studio, and the restore CD I got with the computer erases EVERYTHING so I'm trying to avoid this as much as possible. Or is there a way to reinstall windows and keep your programs?

The heatsink is installed in the right direction, I double checked that. Now when you say heat-transfer material between the heatsink and the CPU core, errr... was something supposed to go between the heat sink/fan and the CPU? All I did was take out the old fan and heat sink, and place the new one on top of the CPU, exactly like what your link showed. Its a mirrored copper heatsink if that's what you mean.

I don't know how many watts the fan takes, and I could have sworn the motor didn't give the watts or amps, just the volts. But I'll doublecheck in the morning.

Yes 🙂 Running a computer without thermal-transfer material between the heatsink and the CPU core is like... mmmm.... like running your car with no engine oil. So run out and get a tube of Arctic Silver 3 or Arctic Silver 5, or Arctic Silver Alumina or Ceramique if you find those, and remove your CPU heatsink, apply a thin coat of the thermal grease to the CPU core and rub some into the base of the heatsink, and reinstall.

Just like running an engine without oil is going to cause damage, you may have permanent damage to the AthlonXP's core and still have lockup episodes down the road, if it really was running with no thermal-transfer material (neither thermal grease nor a phase-change square patch). If that's the case, another AthlonXP 1800+ won't cost much 🙂

Your mention of the System Restore CDs has me guessing that this is a Compaq, perhaps? If so, then another possible fly in the ointment is that Compaq's little power supply may simply be having a hard time coping with the added power drain of your Radeon 9600XT (which is probably on par with the CPU itself) plus a high-output 12-volt fan and another memory module on top of that. Have you considered putting the computer back to stock form, and building yourself a new gaming computer with your Radeon 9600XT? If you need help, see the guide in my signature... it isn't hard, and there's even pizza involved 😀

OUCH, DO NOT turn that puter on again untill you apply some thermal grease or get a heatsink with a thermal pad installed on it (easier for a inexperienced person to install). Thermal pads do not dissapate heat as well as thermal grease but they are easy to install, pull off the tape on the pad and slap the heatsink on.

I also agree your power supply may be insufficient however the freezing is due to your CPU overheating due to improper heatsink fan installation.
 
Okay, first off: ARRRRGGGGHHHH!! Why oh why didn't the instructions that came with the fan say anything about thermal glue?? How are us newbies supposed to know something like that?

Okay, I'm done venting! The computer will not be turned on until I can ge me some thermal grease, thank you all for your help in that regard!

As far as power consumption, I'm not sure how to find out if my componants are taken up too much power. Its an eMachine if that helps anyone. The new fan appears to actually take less power (12V .14A) than the old fan that came installed (12V .25A). Okay, looking at the sticker inside the computer, it says:

Input rating:
100V-127V - 6A
200V-240V - 3A
50/60Hz

Out rating:
250W (MAX)
Then it gives the voltages and amps for each color
Then says "+5V &amp; 3.3V 150W MAX, Total current from +5V and 3.3V shall not exceed 27A. Total current from +5V and -12V shall not exceed 12A"

So is there not enough power, or what is an easy way to find out? Thank you all for your help!

Regarding power drain, the main concern to me is that you've got a powerful video card that draws about as much power as the CPU itself. A really fine 250W PSU would get the job done on a system that isn't extravagantly loaded in other ways (lots of hard drives, etc) but if there were a way to get a good-quality 300W-400W PSU into the eMachines, that's what I would be doing. I'm crazy like that 😀 But I suspect it uses a microATX power supply and you just don't have an easy time finding a good-quality 300-400W microATX PSU.

Hence my suggestion of letting the eMachines be an eMachines 😛 and build yourself a nice, standard-ATX gaming rig to use your Radeon 9600XT and your extra RAM in.

Thanks all for the help, I used the thermal glue, and tested the computer using some high end applications and so far no crashes. Whoohoo!
