My computer started freezing up last night. This is the first time I've experienced this problem.
First of all, for reference, here?s my set up. I built this computer myself in January of 2006, replacing an EVGA 7800 with the 7900 in April of ?06. So, everything is a little over 3 years old. I?ve never had significant problems with the computer until now. I?ve never tried overclocking, so I know the problem is not related to that.
Major Parts:
ASUS A8N-E Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 1GHz FSB Socket 939
Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM
EVGA 256-P2-N565-AX GeForce 7900GT 256MB
WD Caviar SE16 SATA 300MB/s 250GB
Antec LifeStyle SONATA II
Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3
The problem is computer freezes after I have booted all the way into Windows. I booted it up several times last night; it would get into Windows, and, after a few seconds to a couple minutes, it completely froze up. I didn?t get a blue screen or an error message or anything like that, the computer just completely stopped.
I bolded the motherboard above, because my best guess right now is that this is related to the A8N-E chipset fan, which I know has caused problems for many people. It started making strange grinding noises a few weeks ago, and just a few days ago I noticed it stopped working completely. :-( Could a bad chipset fan alone be causing this, or do people here have any other suggestions? Thanks!
