Ok, so i have a little problem. Whenever i am playing a game (world of warcraft) , after about 45min - 1hr the screen freezes and the screen either turns white or the picture gets all jumbled up. nothing is overclocked, its all running stock, any ideas?

specs:

q9550 2.83ghz
sapphire 4870 (fan at 40%, catalyst 8.7)
asus p5q deluxe (bios 0803)
4gb corsair ram (TWIN2x4096-6400c4DHX) running at 800mhz, 4-4-4-12, 2.1v
Corsair 620hx PSU
Western digital 640gb HD
Windows vista home premium 64bit.
Xigmatek s1283 heatsink w/ Mx-2
4 scythe 120mm fans, 2 intake, 2 exhaust

now for temperatures im running 2 different programs.

at idle PC Probe 2 shows my CPU at 23c, and mobo at 38c
at idle realtemp shows each core temp. core 0: 39c, core 1: 20, core 2: 31, core 3: 31
catalyst control center shows my 4870 at 48c.

that first core at 39c seems a bit high no? maybe thats my issue? if its at 39c now at idle, itd probably shoot up pretty high?

help! :(

Welcome to anandtech. What kind of load temps are you getting from your 4870? From your description, it very much sounds to me as if either your video card or power supply are overheating.

No, 39C is a fine idle temp. You shouldn't be going up more than 10-15C under load, so you'd still be plenty cool.

It wouldn't be the PSU, otherwise he would have other issues. Turn up the fan on the 4870 to around 80%.....if it's too loud for you, then you may want a different card, as the 4870 NEEDS extra cooling, 'cause it gets VERY hot at default fan-speeds.....crank up the fan and you should be fine, though.

running the fan at 40% i get 45-47C idle, and 53-56 on load, so i really dont think increasing the fan THAT high will really do much, but i guess ill give it a whirl. i cant wait for my ears to start bleeding!! =p

ive run memtest and prime, no errors at all. so im happy about that. im going to try something i found on the ATI forums. it has to do with powerplay and editing the same profile where i changed the fan speed. ill get back to you all and see if anything happens. thanks for the help, appreciate it.
