computer freezes at startup

This is weird, and has happened twice.

Fresh installation of WinME on an Athlon 850 with 512mb of RAM. Motherboard is generic but never had problems like this before. Old hard drive went bad so that's the reason for the new install.

First time after install, all was well. INstalled all my apps, got everything up and running. No problems. THEN, I go to windows update, download the critical updates and something goes wrong. Computer freezes. I restart, and now, right as windows is loading, just before the desktop comes up, the hourglass stops. I can still move the mouse around, but nothing else happens. I restart in safe mode, try system restore, and restore doesn't work!

So I reinstall. All is fine, all apps are in, no problems. But then I go to install the onboard audio drivers (I didn't even get that far the first time) and same thing happens. upon restarting the computer locks up at the very same point before the desktop loads. System restore doesn't work. Damn thing won't load.

So I'm gonna have to reinstall, AGAIN.

But what could be the problem? Bad motherboard? I dunno...the OS installs fine. All my apps install fine. It's just some little thing that locks the computer up. Any ideas?
