Computer freezes at random points of the reinstall...help?

Hey guys...

my brother's computer freezes at random points during an XP boot install. it either freezes before the reformat, during the reformat, or during the system files copy.

i've tested every part of the computer and the only things that i think are causing this is the motherboard, power supply, or some funky setting in the BIOS.

Any suggestions on what's going wrong?

i have no idea, but i've had that problem before , it's so annoying. have you tried a different cd? maybe its the cd or the cd drive. it's such a bizarre problem.

Try running memtest86. It can help identify problems with the mobo, in addition to bad RAM. I had a pc that was crashing. Any memory I put in the system would fail memtest86. The same memory would pass all tests on another mobo, though. I replaced the mobo and all problems went away. I highly recommend memtest86 to anyone.

I agree that bios can cause install problems .I installed win2000pro and had problems.I turned off just about everything in bios and joy it installed! The main thing is don't give up you will get it .It can take some time but you learn along the way.

My thoughts......

Overclock------> Off
Memory Timings ----------> Lowest
Extra peripherals ----------> Pulled out and installed after main XP install (Leave one drive and one CD Drive in only)
Maybe Power Supply -----------> Swap test with one of yours.....🙂 (or not)

If it still fails, then you have some component going bad. Swap test what you can.

P.S. If you think there may be some "funky" settings in bios, then pull your power cord and reset your CMOS with the jumper.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'll keep trying to and post updates. I've been battling this crap for too long...😱

Well i've tired everyting guys. I only connected one cd rom and my video card with my hd (of course). I've changed every part possible on the computer besides the power supply and mohterboard. I've changed every setting in the BIOS and i still have no results. 🙁

Anybody have any ideas?

Sounds like the problem is on the motherboard. Have you checked for BIOS updates? If it's current, and there are no identified issues with this make and model, you may have a bad component, in which case, it's time for a new one.

It's happened to me when the Virus Protector is on in the BIOS and when I've had a bad CD (not CDROM), the CD itself was reading bad.

I tihnk its PSU,

When installing Windows CPU usage is at 100% might be too much for the power supply..

Can u underclock to save some power.. See if that does it..

Thanks for the replies guys.

I will check for BIOS updates, but how do you install them when you have no operating system currently installed?

I'll try underlocking the CPU...great suggestion!

And...it is a LEGAL copy of XP (it just happens to be from my friends work :beer: )

Thanks for all the help!
