Computer freezes after leaving for 10 or so minutes... Anyone know?

Sorry for posting this here guys, but i sorta need a really quick answer and hell, ATOT is the place to get one 🙂

Im sending this computer back to my friend in an hour or two (she lives in NJ, im in FL). Basically what happens is that when i leave her computer idle for a little while (10 mins or more usually) it just completely freezes. The screensaver is frozen and so is the mouse (logitech cordless freedom optical). Only way to recover is to use the reset button.

The computer is running XP and under Power Options subcategory in the Display Properties, everything is set to Never.

Please help if you can...

Could there be a setting im missing somewhere...maybe something with the ACPI in the bios?

temps are actually pretty low compared to my system... Havent seen her computer run above 41c

as for the video driver, i was having the infinite loop problem with every other driver but this one.... took about 4 hours of different drivers to fix that problem 🙂

With any other driver i couldnt use windows for more than 30 seconds without a spontanous freeze, then BSOD, then reboot

<< Have you disabled the sleep mode in the bios? >>

where would i find that, under ACPI settings?

Under Power Management Settings in the Bios i have the following...

ACPI Function - Enabled
ACPI Suspend Type - S1(POS)
Power Mgmt Option - User Define
Hdd Power Down - Disabled
Suspend Mode - Disable
Vid Off Option - Suspend ---> Off
Video Off Method - V/M SYNC+blank

What screen saver are you using? have you tried leaving it on without a screen saver to see if that's causing the freeze?

Also, turn off power management in the BIOS.

Im trying to see if it will freeze without a screensaver... According to her though, it used to...

What exactally does the ACPI (power management stuff) do??

I doubt you'll be able to fix this issue within an hour or two. Unless you're very lucky, you'll have to pull the system apart, after you've eliminated the possibility of a software issue.

<< Yes turn off power mgt. That is usually a major cause of freeze ups after having your PC idle. >>

Welp, i choose Disable for 'ACPI Function'

Restarted and it wouldnt even boot to XP. The screen just stayed black right after post. So i turned it back on and it went right into windows the next reboot... hmmmmmm

No no no.

"Power Mgmt Option - User Define" Should be "Disable"

Best solution for not freezing == install Linux 😛

Seriously, though, that ACPI should not be turned on if you want trouble-free operation. Good luck!

Heres the setup:

Epox 8KHA Mb
1.4ghz Athlon
NIC
Visiontek xtacy Geforce2 GTS
Sony 16x CDRW
Maxtor 80gb 7200rpm

There is no Disable 🙁

All there is, is User Define, Min Saving, Max Saving and it changes the Suspend Mode option from Disabled to a time figure...

Bummer. That's not how my P4T-E works. 🙁 I'm fresh outta ideas.

Wait, try seeing if the "video off option" has a "disable."

That might do the trick.

If all else fails, you might have to set ACPI to "disable," and reinstall XP.

K, well Video Off is now disabled... Ill see how that goes.. Thanks for the help.. If anyone else has any ideas, feel free to post em 🙂

have you grabbed the latest 4 in 1's? is that mouse a usb? if it is visit usbman.com via SUX hardcore when it comes to usb, I am having all kinds of problems getting my computer to stop locking up when I have usb devices plugged in, I made some changes in the bios which grants me more time (about 30 minutes when on internet, but playing games about 2 hours or more) there are numerous workarounds apparently for this problem, but the only real fix is a pci usb controller that is not running a via chipset (assuming this is your problem) just check out a few of those tricks on usbman.com that should give a temporary fix to the problem, and if it persists you can pick up a 30 dollar usb card (what I am doing)

Go into Power mgt and go to user defined.

Go into each setting and change to never. Such as HDD power down, video power down, etc.
