Computer freezes after I flashed bios

I had some problems shuting down Windows, so after doing many different things I thought the bios could be at fault. However, after I flashed the bios the computer now freezes up. It will be fine for a minute or less but then I can't click on anything. The cursor will move around still but nothing else works. Could this be from a bad bios flash or possibly something else? I would really appreciate any help. Also in case it matters, the MB is an Epox 8KHA. Thanks.

Most likely you have ur bios settings set to default after the flash, so therefore, it would be in your interest to change these settings around. Lower some like the AGP aperture size, Ram timings, Memory speed, etc. Then, if you don't freeze up anymore, start bumping them up again one by one to see how high you can be stable.

Why would the default settings for the old bios work but the defaults for the newer bios not work?

If you're running Windows 98 and having shut down issues, there's a patch on Microsoft's web site. You might want to check that out.

Well I have actually done that and Windows still didn't shut down right. If I do shut Windows down before it crashes or locks, it will half the time shut down correctly now.

just a note that shutdown fix on microsofts site really causes more problems than its worth sometimes at least it did on mine(sometimes it wouldnt shut down and sometimes it just locked up
my computer)

for info only sorry!

I use the win98 shutdown patch extensively at work because our image that we reload everytime something goes bad needed it. One thing you have to remember is to leave the floppy in until after it reboots and says hey this disk is not bootable. I made the mistake of poppin it out early once it begins to shutdown and it didn't work.

Between the bios update and another patch from Windows update (something to do with networked drives), the computer does shut down correctly if I do it first. Weird thing is, the computer only crashes if I do something like play video. It's fine surfing the internet and basic stuff.

I tried tweaking the bios settings but nothing seemed to help. I did get an answer from Epox and they said to do a clean install of Windows. Oh well, I wanted to install Linux anyways.
