Computer Freezes 7+ times per day

It is toally random. It happens at all times during the day, but it usually doesn't freeze when the computer is just sitting. I think it's the MB because the FDD controller on it stopped working (yes I know it's the controller on the MB I checked everything). Lightning also struck the dorm I was in. I had it on a surge protector, but that was the time it seemed to start to mess up. I am going to check my memory on memtest, but would you guys agree it is probably the MB? I also switched cases about 2 months ago so I could have accidently shorted out something. Anything comments you guys have?

Edit: Is their anyway this could be caused by my video card? A few days ago I was getting critical system errors that said I needed new video drivers. The problem is I have the latest ones. If it was caused by my vid card I would probably say it is the mb fault anyway because 2 days ago I had to reinstall the V Card because it wouldn't boot up. I had to reattach the v card to the mb and before that it was working fine.

check your voltages. I was getting random freezes like that too, then checked and saw that my 12 V rail was running at 15.5 V. ditched that motherboard the same day and havn't had a single crash since.

So you switched the PSU or MB? 15.5 volts isn't horrible unless your running a really, really nice system or gaming.

I'll bet a nickel it's software.

However, here's suggestions.

1. I'd boot safe mode and run for a day and see if you have issues.
2. I'd unplug all unnecessary hardware from your machine and run it.
3. I'd beg/borrow/steal a 20gig harddrive, yank out your harddrive, and freshly format the temp harddrive, install everyting on it, and run it. I bet it never crashes.

Or, it's the memory. If you have multiple sticks of ram, take one out and run it for awhile.

Or, download the Microsoft free memory testing utility and try it out.

My first thought was memory too. I tried Memtest and it didn't detect errors in a stick of ram I was having trouble with. So don't alway trust those tests. Just swap things around.
