Computer Freeze Ups

A friends computer freezes up after a certain amount of time. its not always the same but this is weird. what can be the symptoms, it just completely dies after so many seconds, and i cant get in windows. how do i know if the power supply is bad?

Could be power supply or the processor overheating. Check the fan on the processor to make sure it works.

alright, well, i dont think its the fan on teh processor but how long does it take for a cpu to heat up too much, and lock up? AMD athalon Tbird 650mhz

is there anything wrong with this chip?

If the fan isn't spinning or is spinning slowly because of debris or eventual failure, the CPU could begin to overheat within 10 seconds under a full load like during boot-up. I think I remember those older Athlons being notoriously hot even with good cooling when compared to comparable Pentiums at that time.
